    sell out against who? ever heard the adage "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". anyway it was a suggestion. I provided you with links where you can appeal on the issue. or turn to travel agency which provide israeli tour. they must have the answers.

    I had a Christian Iraqi colleague who went to Israel as a tourist.

    He has a Danish pasport and a Christian first name, followed by a string of Arab names. He went with a group of members from his church. Although being quite light skinned he looks Middle Eastern, but he didn´t have any problems at all.

    Whether because of one of his names being Christian or because he went on a group tour arranged by his church, I don´t know.

    I think so.. I wouldn't go for the regular muslim names. I'm sick and tired of those names (because the lack of originality and religious connection). I would not call my son Muhammad for example. But if there are middle-eastern names shared by Arab Christians and Jews I can go for them. Or secular names that work across Middle-Eastern religions and cultures. For example I think Miriam is a fantastically beautiful name. I wouldn't mind calling my son Dylan for example. Or Jasmine or Rose (I'd go for Rosemary but I don't want my daughter growing up to hate me) for my daughter. I mean the name itself wouldn't be Western because I want them to fit in but simply because I like the name. I wouldn't call my son Christian for example or Jacob etc. These names ring of religiosity to me and I don't feel connected to that.

    Although I have to add I wouldn't mind Michael as a name. So I guess some of the Judeo-Christan names are OK.

    Adam, Joseph, Yasmin, Farah, Tina.....etc are all beautiful names.

    I hate my name though. I really do. Mohammed ewww. Not gonna change it.

    Why not change it by deep poll to something similar, like Mo.  I did that with my first name, and just used the first syllable, and all it takes legally is to  post a letter with a £30 cheque and its done.

    I never really got that. Why not change your name then? I mean who wants to be called Moe? It doesn't even feel like a real name. If my parents gave me that as a real name I'd be pissed off. Thanks for deciding my name 2 seconds before I popped my head out. No offense to anybody that is called Moe.

    I and my siblings all have names from the Bible.

    I'm kinda glad it worked out that way. I certainly wouldn't want to endure the beatings that would result from my being called Anthony-Gerrard.

    My hifz teacher used to do that all time. "Rasoolullah, pees be upon him." It used to crack me up, then I'd feel guilty at laughing at the holy prophet. Then I laughed a little more. The I felt guilty again and performed 2 rakaats of salaah for forgiveness. Fun times.

    What about the hassle of contacting all the places to change your name? e.g. passport, banks, local council, utility companies, insurance companies, doctor, dentist, etc etc.
    When I was in my leaving stage, all kinds of thoughts went through my head, including whether I would change my name in case my family hunted me down.  But now I don't think it is necessary.  However, as BD said, unfortunately when applying for jobs, it might be a disadvantage to have a Muslim name.  The image of Muslims these days is not great.

    Sorry to OP for hijacking your thread.  This issue is interesting and perhaps needs a separate thread.  Or better still, a poll.

    Its not that much hassle as you might think.  Most of them are faxable, or you send a global letter to them all.  Just write a list of them all with fax numbers & addresses and blitz them all in one go, which is what I did.. Oh, getting a re-issued passport is the only other cost.

    It solves the problem of identifying with your name, that you talked about earlier.  It wasnt an Islamic issue for me though, The first syllable of my name was my nickname anyway and my first name was a long winded arabic name with strong rough sounding letters in it.  I always hated, and so glad I got rid of it.

    That sounds like good choices.

    You live in Scandinavia and there are lots of Scandinavian names that have nothing to do with Christianity so you also have a wide range of names there to choose from, but perhaps they don´t appeal to you.

    I am named after the misogynist Umar ibn Khattab. When I was a kid I would always dream of changing my name to "fit in". Now it is more a case of wanting to "opt out". I don't think I could ever go through with it, I have grown rather attached to it. I think it is one of those few "Islamic" names that has managed to transcend Islam in a way. Hell, there is even someone called Omar in the Old Testament. And his father is Eliphaz.  Wink
