^^Perhaps, but I'm banking on there being at least 3 goals in it - Brazil winning but it will be a battle.

I think Spain will win but Del Bosque will need to make a tough choice and pick fabregas in the starting lineup.

I think Fernando Torres will be dropped to the bench. He has become the Spanish Emile Heskey.  wacko

David Villa is their main goal threat anyway. With a 4-2-3-1 formation that has a midfield of Alonso, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, and Fabregas behind Villa I say Portugal will really struggle against them. If things dont go well, then bring on Jesus Navas, Torres, and David Silva in the 2nd half.

But Portugal have shown they have a very solid defensive line. They have not conceded a single goal in this World Cup so far. Even against Brazil and Cote d'Ivoire they were solid.

    9) Schande von Gijón (The Shame of Gijón) — West Germany vs. Austria, 1982
Algeria will make their first World Cup appearance for 24 years, and if there is one team they will be dying to face it will be Germany. Back in 1982, the North Africans caused a sensation when they defeated the European Champions West Germany 2-1 in the opening game of Group 2 thanks to goals from the legendary Rabah Madjer and Lakhdar Belloumi.

Algeria attained four points from their three games (two wins and a defeat), and would be guaranteed a place in the next round providing West Germany didn’t defeat Austria by one or two goals in the final game of the pool.

The West Germans launched wave after wave of early attacks, taking a 10th minute lead through Horst Hrubesch. For the following 80 minutes both sides, knowing that the current scoreline would qualify them both, made virtually no attempt to attack with the ball almost continuously being passed sideways.

The crowd in Gijón were disgusted by what they saw. Algerian fans waved banknotes and white handkerchiefs, while Spaniards chanted "Fuera, fuera" ("Out, out"). One German supporter was so ashamed that he burnt his national flag. Algeria complained to FIFA, but their protest was rejected. This game did result in one important change to the rules as from Euro ’84 onwards the last games of a group in international tournaments always took place at the same time so that teams didn’t know in advance what result they required.

Haha yeah. People are to this day still going on about it.

He goes down and complains about being fouled, that when he is actually fouled the referees wave play on...probably with a knowing smirk on their faces.  Cheesy

If Ronaldo concentrated less on getting freekicks awarded everytime he gets touched by a defender's fart, and focused on the true talents he has....then he would be unstoppable!

Indeed. This World Cup has been ridiculously blighted by some horrible refereeing mistakes to the extent FIFA feels embarassed about their resistence to using technology to assist referees.

A lot of decent teams played shitly and got put out, and I haven't seen a lot of the games, myself.

My team, Germany, is still in it. But I suspect they won't go through after playing Argentina...

Has this been a good world cup so far in your opinion guys?

I've enjoyed it. Some of the technical play has been spoilt by the talk of the ball - even if the ball itself doesn't have any problems, we saw a lot of players refraining from making long passes/ through balls because they didnt trust the flight and weight of the ball and instead made the easy pass. That's not to say the ball is at fault, it's just that when everyone talks about the ball being different, you have to expect the players to be cautious with it.

As for the matches, all the european teams bar Spain/ Germany have been disappointing. They've all been very regimented and organised but haven't been able to produce anything extra-ordinary - as can be seen by the constant shouting from the sidelines by the coaches, it seems as if the coaches want to plan everything down to the last detail and conduct the matches like war campaigns. Such tactics will get you wins but it's not the beautiful game. (Read Holland and the now knocked out Portugal.)

I still maintain that Brazil are not as good as they are beng made out to be. Their midfield trio of Gilberto/ Melo/ Elano (or Alves) is hardly the best available and if it wasn't for Kaka they wouldn't have anything special in the last third. Yes, that does mean I don't rate Robinho very highly. The only reason Brazil are getting through is because they're playing a very european game and it's hardly surprising that they haven't had as many of the neutral fans as normal.

Spain and Germany though are the teams that are really being inventive. Spain, especially, every time I have seen them have conducted themselves magnificently. With so many yellow and red cards being thrown around by the refs it is some statistic to know that Spain only have one yellow card after 4 matches. They've also played the game as it should be played, with quick, incisive passing and brilliant movement off the ball in every direction. For Germany, though Ozil is taking all the plaudits, I think Khedira has been the real star and Ballack shouldn't displace him by default at all. He's been brilliantly composed on the ball and has made the most intelligent runs into the box I've seen all tournament.

(and yes, I've watched every single game  grin12)
