When I was doing investigations into this on my blog, I think Ali did a similar thing once with the scientific mishaps in the quran too, either the earth being round or with the origin of sperm verses..

I think he translated the verses from surah 86 more or less accurately.

    [86:5]
Now let man but think from what he is created!

    [86:6]
He is created from a drop emitted-

    [86:7]
Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

A comical one is how YA and MA try to interpret one of the 'solid sky' verses.

    Yusuf Ali

    [22:65]
Seest thou not that God has made subject to you (men) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the sky (rain) from failing on the earth except by His leave: for God is Most Kind and Most Merciful to man.

    Muhammad Asad

    [22:65]
Art thou not aware that it is God who has made subservient to you all that is on earth, and the ships that sail through the sea at His behest – and [that it is He who] holds the celestial bodies [in their orbits], so that they may not fall upon the earth otherwise than by His leave?
Verily, God is most compassionate towards men, a dispenser of grace

Ah-hahahaha! Why didn't he just plagiarise Yusuf Ali's interpretation? At least it's half-way plausible

Translation is in itself a process of interpretation and as Abdul-Noor says:

"None of them start from zero. On the contrary they start off with absolute faith in His words...

Would that I knew how a person can analyse the Qur'an in an objective, dispassionate, independent way when his hands are tied...?"

That really would be important. I mean seriously, it would.

But it sounds like the kind of undertaking that would take years, and require sponsorship. And given the nature of the task, that might be be slow in coming forth. But still, I reckon that would be a massively important achievement if someone were to ever do it.

There's already a plethora of translations, although I suppose good ones are hard to find.

I'd say Pickthall's translation is more accurate than YA's or MA's. I don't know enough about Arberry's translation, but given that he was a non-Muslim, I doubt it'd be an apologetic one.

A good literal, verbatim translation is the Aal al-Bayt translation you can find on altafsir.com.

    Exactly.

Some Muslims will actually say, with a straight face, that if they have a verse of the Qur'an that's factually or scientifically problematic, then they'll just reinterpret it until it's correct. They really don't see the problem with this completely circular reasoning.

The Qur'an simply must be correct, and therefore must be interpreted, however tenuously, to make it correct.

Maybe one day I'll do a translation - an ex-muslim version of the Qur'an - with annotations - lol that should be fun  Afro

Oh man, you should REALLY REALLY do that hassan! Pls. start on it, one page a day or one surah per weekend, that would be SO important! We really need an objective translation of quran.

Nah, there's no need.  Most of the Quran is about how great Allah is, and Islam is and how stupid kaffirs are for not accepting the message.  We only need a translation of the dodgy versus, which have already been done on here & FFI..

Odd how Allah's greatest miracle to all mankind is inaccessible to most of them.

They have to take other people's word for it.

Yet it's strange how many non-Arabic speakers are so confident that it is indeed sublimely beautiful without contradiction or error - yet cannot verify this for themselves!

Here is a chap parroting stuff he himself cannot verify properly. It is obvious that his Arabic knowledge is at best rudimentary.

But he's sooooooooooooooooo sure he is right! Bless him.

But its the footnotes that would really give the thing wings.

I feel genuinely sorry for that guy. Same lobotomised expression, same circular reasoning. I'm pretty sure there's a video of him on Youtube talking about how Allah gave him 7 dollars and 50 cents every time he went to buy something and forgot his wallet.

Yeah I understand that completely. It would be a very long term commitment and you would have to be paid for it because it would take so much time out of your life. And you would be opening yourself up to alot of attention from offended Muslims too. But its a great idea, maybe one day someone could do it.

thank @li for your helpful comments.

I think project reason has a website looking at the quran and the bible, it's a bit tricky to navigate though. not particularly user friendly.

Interesting to view so many viewpoints on the best/accurate translation. it thought it must have been relatively straightforward but looking at it more closely words have different meanings due to context, intonation, cadence etc etc etc

    another question.

i checked out wikiislam as it was mentioned in one other thread, and i was reading one of the stories on people who l have left islam.
    Quote
After few days, he openly told his family that we had gotten married, and his mom insisted that he take me to the same Mufti who had guided him through this, and so he did. Here is what the Mufti said when I was in front of him: "What is the big deal if the girl has become a Muslim? Let her remain a Muslim. You cannot go against the wishes of your Mom. You cannot marry that girl - let her remain a Muslim. You will get a reward on the day of judgement

you will get a reward on the day of judgement... is that within down somewhere in the Quran or associated texts, that you will be reward for converting a non Muslim, or was a general you'll get your rewards for a doing a good deed?

If you ask me to define anything i will slap you with my pimp hand and make you cry like a biatch.
