    They are legit for THEM.  They are the ones who have to live with what they deduced from their studies.  My understanding is legit for ME.  I only reject their opinions as being somehow proof against scrutiny as you are implying.

    Darwin isn't a god, true.  That just makes it all the more surprising that The Origin of Species is a better book than the Qur'an.

    It contains zero threats of hellfire for those who refuse to take Darwin's word for it.  Instead he tries the novel approach of engaging his readers' intellect and providing evidence for his claims.  Its also better written and less repetitive, although I'll concede that that advantage may not apply to the Qur'an in its original Arabic.

    No the Holy Prophet did not write the Quran, it was compiled underneath Caliph Uthman 20 years after the prophets death, and he was the one who authenticated it.

    Do you accept the Quran was written & authenticated by man, and it was them who claimed it was protected by Allah?

    (NB: I am not asking about the original words in the prophets time)

    Short answer: No.

    The problem, however, is that everyone insists on their version to be the correct version of Islam EVEN when it contradicts the basic rules.

    Let me explain with only one example from the Salafi beliefs. Salafis believe that one should *hate* non-Muslims and give them a hard time. They of course base this on some Sunni Hadiths, but when you point out to them that the Quran says that Muslims are actually allowed to be friendly towards those non-Muslims who do NOT war against them, they try to defend their Hadiths by manipulating the clear meaning of the verses in the Quran regarding this.

    Salafis would tell you that the Quran is the ultimate source of religious truth. However, since they practically raise Bukhari et al to the level of prophets, they would not admit to any of the glaring contradictions of Hadith with the Quran.

    As far as I'm concerned I am playing by the rules except I don't accept the status they give to Bukhari et al.

    I would say Mutazilites have the best overall idea of how one should approach religion, although I don't accept a lot of their beliefs.
