Have you read the hadiths describing Muhammad's looks?

I suspect the way it happened most often was through voluntary debt-slavery.

I think you are alleging to the abolished western practice of debtor's prison.
This kind of thing shouldn't happen in the Islamic world because they are not allowed to charge interest. So people are a lot less likely to be trapped by debt.

So the only ones who would lend someone more than they could pay back should be close friends. It only makes sense.

I don't think there would be many cases where one party lent to another party who couldn't pay back and chose to pay back by making himself a slave. If services were an acceptable way to pay back debt then that is not slavery. Slavery is when the person's freedom is taken away.

But I suppose if I were desperate to defend something obviously as wrong as slavery then I would also come up with such wishful arguments.

but that would make me full of shit.

I think your statement clearly explains the major difference between you and the most of the members here. In the case of a conflict between faith and reason, most of the members of this forum would side with reason, whereas you would be on the side of faith.

    Did I get you wrong?

It depends on the context and exactly what is being referred to that requires either one.  If we are talking about anything in the Unseen, then yes.  I will definitely lean towards faith.  By neccessity.

I was actually speculating into possible ways people most often became slaves in the ages before American slavery.  I also said hereditary slavery... a whole class of people who'd been slaves traditonally for generations... may have been one of them.

This kind of thing shouldn't happen in the Islamic world because they are not allowed to charge interest. So people are a lot less likely to be trapped by debt.  So the only ones who would lend someone more than they could pay back should be close friends. It only makes sense.

It makes sense that greedy and evil men will do whatever in order to make a buck/dinar.  No matter what religion they claim to practice.

Your freedom is taken away in exchange for what you owe.

Reason and faith both are your faculties, but on any given issue they are almost mutually exclusive. Would you please tell me why do you prefer faith over your own reasoning abilities on any given issue including the unseen?

Islam is a funny religion which is misunderstood by its scholars and correctly understood by ordinary Muslims.
Faith is keeping your eyes shut when looking at the world, and/or keeping your eyes open only for the beauty of the world.

Really? I was surprised when I read his description I never in my life thought he would look like this:

That's him getting ready with 4:34 (Quran verse for healthy dose of ass-whoppin' of wife/wives). I think Aisha had over-cooked his mutton-stew, can you blame her though? She was only 11 at the time.

What does being Muslim have to do with race?

i really want to know cause it pisses me off that everytime someone critizises islam he is called a racist, even if he is an arab.

I disagree.  Depending on what you are doing/thinking you would use various levels of each.

We don't know everything.  In fact, we can't know everything.  In order to move forward on certain issues we need to have a leap of faith that what we think about a certain point inside of that issue is true.  There are certain things we deal with, like mathematics, that require pretty much total reasoning/logic and little faith.  Others, like the Unseen, require mostly faith.

Such is the the case with all of the various tools in the human repertoire.  You don't use everything for everything.

I cannot possibly disagree with you more.  It's like you have a super-strong, anti-Islam force field that is SO negative, you can't grasp my analogy.  If no one has ever done something before, but you believe you can, that is FAITH in it's most practical application.  Period.

You are implying that it is impossible for Muslims to be scientists because they believe in Allah and His Book.  Experience has shown me that it is impossible to have a decent coversation with that kind of over-weird bigotry that flies in the face of the facts of recorded history.

I'm going to stand over here now.  whistling2

No, it's not faith; it's called experimentation. And you keep on devising different experiments until you find something that works and is repeatable, not just by yourself but by anyone at all times applicable. Then you might be in a position to formulate a theory. After that comes technology.  It's not faith. it's rocket science---hence.

    Logically impossible to WHO???

I know my Lord is Omnipotent and can thus do anything.  It is logical for an Omnipotent Being to be able to do anything.  If I don't get it it means, quite simply, that I'M not omniscient.

    What's the problem?

I think your confusing your sky god with his anagram 'Impotent On(e)'. Well, close anyway.

Before having faith in something or someone you should have faith in yourself, because it is you who choose in who to have faith, since you don't look to have faith in yourself i don't think you are able to have the ability to have faith in something else but just to follow what people tell you about it, you have to understand that there is a big difference between being a faithful person and a follower.

It's faith that fuels your continuous trying until it happens.  Without that faith you'd quit after the first experiment failure.  Or never try the experiment at all.

Hold on to one of the religions that you like best (i like islam  Smiley).  Based on what the religion says, hold up all other religions to it to see how it holds up.  If it fails pick the one that beat it.  Repeat.  Kind of like a Blood Sport, battle to the death competition.  The last one standing wins.

To save time, just start off with Islam.

    1) If we are starting from the beginning, arent you assuming by this scenario that the creator wanted to send a message?
    2) What if by the above process you determine Buddhism to be the one true religion (as many people do)
    3) What is the way of determining who is right?

Cute.  Nice try, but in my fictional world magick is merely super advanced mathematics/science.  What our science will be in ten thousand years or so.  Remember the Krell from Forbidden Planet?  Like that.  Science so advanced it becomes "magic-like" and capable of wish fullfillment at a thought.
