IA... i think i smoke mostly when im bored.  But i am definitely addicted and have tried
to quit.  My doc prescribed me bupropion HCL.. and while it definitely helped me cut back,
and much less desire to smoke, i cant shake it off compeltely.

Forget killing yourself, you kill others too with second hand smoke finmad

Roll Eyes Bullshit. I have yet to see one methodologically-sound study to show that second-hand smoke kills non-smokers, especially adult non-smokers. Now they're goin on about "third-hand smoke". It's puritanical, moral panic bullshit.

There are tons of environmental pollutants people are exposed to everyday, and they want me to think my smoking is killing other people based on conjecture, moral panic, and decidedly unscientific medical studies on the subject? Fuck that.

Rubbing a cock before penetration with the ashes of a cigarette is guaranteed to kill them dirty coochie germs. FACT!

That's one of my crazy meds-- hasn't helped me cut back smoking one bit. I hear Chantix is awesome though.

Q... yeah, it is also a psychotropic drug.  It was while studying it that they realized it had also helped
people quit/cut back smoking.  Its the only one im aware of that doesnt turn you
into a zombie, but instead is more of an "upper"

No, No: functional impotency.  All peripheral areas are blood starved in smokers, that's why they age faster (they get that battered, kipper look from c. 30 onward. By 50 some of 'em look ancient but by then it doesn't matter anyway because they are already starting to die off prematurely, as smokers do, of the bad stuff, like lung cancer.

Ok the term 'kill' isn't appropriate, but passive smoking exposes non-smokers to the same carcinogens as smokers and this would certainly cause a higher increase in various health problems, especially the long-term ones like cancer if you are exposed to it on a fairly regular basis.

When I used to be stuck in a room full of smokers, I'd temporarily have an irritable throat, nausea and a splitting headache. Of course everyone has different levels of tolerance and some people may not have any obvious physical effects.

The third hand smoking is a bit of a stretch I think, though my bf's mother has a separate bathroom in their house just for her smoking... and after years of it, the entire room is a sickly shade of orange brown wacko I accidentally stepped into the room once and almost freaked out coz it looked nasty. Everything was coated with the stuff. I know that's an extreme case though.

Our modern lifestyle does bring us into contact with lots of harmful chemicals, but I still wouldn't expose myself to a concentrated form of any chemical. We're already at high risk for cancer through so many means... why increase my chances?

I have nothing against people smoking, I just prefer if it wasn't around me. I don't mind the occasional contact with smoke, I just don't want to have to go to a restaurant, be on a plane etc and have to endure it for long periods. I think the smoking ban in public places is a great idea, but I do feel bad for smokers having to endure unpleasant weather and such to satisfy their habits.
There should be more 'smoking shelters' and the like for them.

I hope I'm not alarming you but the truth is, non-smokers die too.  Smiley

The only difference is that smokers get to die doing what they wanted to do while they had the chance.

We do , we do. BUT:- all the research shows that smokers lose up to 30 years of life compared to control groups and suffer more diseases and ill- health getting there, so perhaps it's a blessed release.  If you don't believe the evidence, why don't you visit the  sputum ward in your local hospital.  That'll put you off smoking for life.  Again, you've got one good finger, so google it for yourself.

@ Smokers, you'll quit when you get seriously sick for sure...
I've been and on-and-off smoker for years, though a few months ago I started smoking heavily for awhile again and then I got a wicked bad cold and still haven't recovered. I've had it for two months now, and every morning I wake up and I need ventalin, and I've never had asthma before this, though now I think I do. So probably a good idea to stop before it's too late!

Also the money thing will make you stop. I recall z10 and smoking about 200 bucks a month worth in smokes, and we were just so poor we had to stop. I know one person who put all the money he would have spent on smokes away every week in a jar and in two years he bought a boat with it! So if you can spare the money, that is a good insentive.

(and z10 is pulling your leg with that death stuff...he's quit mostly for awhile now Wink It's not the death from cigs that scares me, it's the effect it has on you while your alive...)

i'm an occasional smoker. i like smoking at home while watching tv or reading a good theoretical physics book (i used to do this before i was married a lot) - but i can only do this when the wife is away nowadays, otherwise i'd get killed like a dog in the street.

quitting smoking is really not that difficult - not for me at least, i seem to be able to go on and off smoking whenever i want.

I hate to disillusion you but quitting for good is difficult. You just have to reach that appropriate level of self disgust and then screw up your will power ( a little used and free commodity).

Now now, let's play nice Wink

SL is just trying to help, though I can see how it sounds preachy. There is no right or wrong here, merely a cost-benefit. Nothing will hurt you with a few smokes here or there, as long as it's not a constant thing anyway. (If you can handle that without it getting out of hand).

Get off your knees and listen, lad. I used to be you Qman. It took me 4 attempts up to the age of 48 to quit for good. I smoked 30 a day. I quit at 26 the first time - for 8 years!  I started again during a bad mania attack. When you're having a manico you think you're superman. When you come down the other side and into depression you curse yourself for starting again. It happened every time I had a manico and then I had to quit again because every time I started, my health was adversely affected.
At 48, I figured I might not be able to muster enough willpower ever again and it was really my last chance to quit for good. That was in 1992 and was aided by a Canadian guy called David Staley who said 'Give me £200 and I'll stop you smoking', and he did; me and 17 more out of a group of 24. We were all still nicotine free after 1 year and, as I've said, I haven't touched one now in 18 years.
In between bouts of smoking I used to get fit again by running a lot, up to 20 miles a day and it's stood me in good stead. It's over a year since my near death experience and this week my cardio consultant has just pronounced me fit for all purposes again. He reckoned that my basic fitness helped me through it all is still good but there's nothing I can do about my genes (both Father and Mother angina carriers).
So, when the final effects of the clot busters I've just come off have disappeared, I'm back on the mileage again.

    "Snopes"?
Well now you've mentioned it, the latest study on harm to smokers' children, released just last week, confirms that birth weights are reduced in smoking mothers' children and in children where anyone else in the household subjects the expectant mother to secondhand smoke.
    Ever heard of 'in denial'?
Anyway, if it's 20 mins since you lit up last, you'd better light up again to satisfy those cravings. That's why smokers smoke - to satisfy the cravings induced by the fall in nicotine levels since the last ciggy. The whole cycle takes c. 20 minutes in most people.

Go for it mate. you'll enjoy life much more when you quit, just to get back to the default standard of health that Nature intended.
set your self a realistic date, say a month or 6 weeks in the future, and then lower the nicotine content of your poison week by week. It says on the pack what that is. Ignore the tar content, that's a red herring.
after c. 4 weeks you'll be smoking so many of the weaker nico brands that you'll be begging to quit because there aren't enough hours in a day to smoke 200 to get your personal addiction dose.  The night before your chosen day, go outside and bury your last pack and your lighter as though you're burying a departed friend.
Be prepared to feel worse for a few weeks before you start to feel the benefits and realise that you may get hot sweats as normal circulation returns, coughing up lumpy phlegm as the cilia in your airways come back to life and function as they should. You may also get constipation/diarrhoea but stick with it because it only lasts a few days.
It only takes about 48 hours for the excess Carbon Monoxide levels in your blood to disappear though and you'll get more energy because of that. You'll also find your taste buds getting back to normal - you'll be able to taste things that you've lost thro' smoking.  There's lots more benefits but I'm banging on a bit .
