So then some objective standards do exist.

You could argue with me that the statements "Beethoven was more talented than Justin Bieber" or "The Rolling Stones were more talented than Matchbox 20" are subjective until you're blue in the face, but I'd say that there are times when the superiority of one musician to another is patently obvious, and those are just two examples. Just because it's not always so obvious, however, because the contrast isn't as great (to use your terminology), doesn't necessarily mean that such judgments are subjective when dealing with finer qualitative scaling.

    fuck you

To jump to the other side of the fence and play devil's advocate here:

It is true that objective standards exist but only because they are constrained by the definition of whatever we are judging. For talent, we may have specific objective criteria that we judge by and this means that there cannot be a subjective result.
However, the definition of talent that we agree on is subjective - there is nothing to stop us from defining talent as we please because words have no necessary connection to anything in "objective' reality.

i managed to avoid listening to him till a few months ago whereupon a school trip+a school-bus and the song being played with no where to escape forced me to listen.

embarrasingly...i liked it. and him. yeah i like justin beiber. i haven't bothered to read the other bits of this thread,  not because im being all rebellious and refusing to read the (i'm being presumptuous i know) "i hate justin beiber" comments but rather because i am lazy and saw the name justin beiber and am professing my like (i use that word tentatively) for him.

I'd also like to add that Bieber's style and image is very cliché. There's absolutely nothing to it. He's a follower, not a trend-setter. Not what great pop stars are made of.

Again, that's not what great pop stars are made of. Michael Jackson wasn't a "neighbourhood boy". Neither was Elvis. Neither were the Beatles. Nor is Lady Gaga. Or Madonna. The pop industry is about having an edge, being unique, and maintaining your 15 minutes of fame for as long as possible. The problem, though, is that many people want to be rich and famous as soon as possible, and celebrities seem to be mass-produced these days. But what do they have to offer? Nothing. They're run-down-the-mill, followers. They're cliché, replaceable. They're the equivalent of MySpace punk bands.

Look at Kanye West (who, by the way, I fucking despise, but at the same time have some respect for). His lyrics are empty as shit, but he has edge and style. He's a trend-setter. M.I.A. is creative like no other artist. And of course, Lady Gaga is so crazy she's freaking out conservatives.

Being a pop star isn't about being accessible. It's about being up there, high on a completely different level. You shouldn't be able to look like a pop star, especially not on your average day. You should want to look like one and try so hard to but never succeed; all you'd be able to do is have a part of him/her in you. When Kanye wore his shutter shades, everyone wanted one. When Nelly stuck a band-aid on his cheek, everyone copied him. When Lady Gaga wore her crazy-ass sunglasses, everyone wanted one. When the Beatles got their hair-cut, everyone wanted it. What does Justin Bieber have to offer? Nothing. I wear plaid shorts, a t-shirt and skating shoes on an average sunny day. And I even try to add edge to it: shorts one size too big, pull it down, tight t-shirt, maybe be a little creative and add an accessory. And I'm a nobody. I shouldn't be able to look more stylish than a pop star on a day that's too hot to wear anything more stylish. And I'm not particularly stylish. I'm not into the whole "having an edge for the sake of it" thing.

I saw videos of Justin Bieber before he became a pop star, and I'll admit, he has potential. But not to be a pop star. He can't sing like one, nor can he dance like one. Nor does he have the edge to be one. He's more of an indie-pop, soft rock type of person, who'd probably be made fun of for having such high-pitched voice... so I guess he's somewhere along the lines of Mika and James Blunt.

It's not about sucking. Like I said, I despise Kanye. I think he's musically mediocre. And I think Nelly is mediocre as well. But that's not the point. Pop isn't about the music.

Lady Gaga has edge. She particularly caters to the gay community. She's what Madonna wanted but was too afraid to be.

Oh, bullshit. She's a cheap clone of Like A Prayer and post-Like A Prayer Madonna. And Madonna and other gay icons managed to become gay icons without looking like they were desperately craving to be gay icons like Lady Gaga is. She's fucking pitiful.

Either way, I don't think she can maintain her 15 minutes for much longer. It seems that she's already dwindling. Personally, I think she set the bar too high for herself.

You can start a thread about her if you want. This thread is exclusively for bashing Justin Bieber. dance
