Julien... i was an american muslim convert. I felt much the same when i first did
my shahada, and also had VERY strict muslims instructing me, but made it all sound
like the right things to do, even though i didnt understand it at the time.  I, too,
began to question the intense hatred for xians and jews.  I started thinking how
much hatred and violence there was within islam.  (I used to be a born again christian,
too)  I remember in my masjid, a preacher was saying how Shaytan pisses (urinates)
in your ears if you dont wake up for fajr.  I thought for several days, what an ugly
thought to be taught in a sermon!!!  I realized, I DONT NEED someone TELLING me
I HAVE TO give charity!!  I do that by myself, and then telling me, "if you do this, or
do that, you will get a better place in jannah".  Where there are all these virgins, and
little boys, and wine.  And WHY would God be so detailed about these virgins being
a virgin every time you have sex with them!!  All of the sudden all these haram things
are halal? AND in the presence of GOD?Huh?  Only once allah comes and asks those
in jannah... hows it going?  you happy/content?  They said, "yeah, thanks!"  And then
allah leaves?Huh?   I didnt want to spend eternity having sex and drinking wine!

    Hi and welcome friend Smiley

Bears is mandatory in Islam, it's not culture.

Women are like that in Paradise as described by hadith, not culture.

The Burqa is good question, there are references that point that it's Islamic. But some say it's culture. References made mostly in hadith.

    Bears?

Welcome to our little online sanctuary, Julien. There is a variety of freethinkers here, from unorthodox Muslims and Sufis, to deists, pantheists, atheists, agnostics, and even some Christians and Hindus. Glad you found us. Feel free to share, vent, ask, answer any ideas you come across.

Hi and thanks to everybody fro the greetings.  thnkyu I didn't expected so much in so a short time.

well, I have read some threads here and I use to live the same kind of situations. I was touched by the story of Abooali and his journey within the Islamiya School and the salafis there.

I became a Muslim when I was 23 years old. I am born as a Christian Catholic. I was the only one in my family who used to go to the church every Sunday and Wednesday...

    Interesting story. Welcome  Afro

one time i was sitting in a mosque and the preacher was talking about usury/interest. he said that the least serious form of usury was similar/likened to having sex with your own mother (has anyone else ever heard this??). i felt sick and it made me stop liking going to the mosque - i very rarely go to the mosque these days.

I was once told that the solution to all Muslims issues was birth control.  There was simply too much of it.

Each Muslim should have six kids and tell each of those 6 kids to have 6 kids.  Then you would get an exponential rise in the number of muslims, soon you'd have a greater influence on power and be in the majority.

i think if you visit a mosque, even infrequently, you should at least make some financial contribution - it's just good manners. and the new cambridge mosque looks like it's going to be quite cool - i think it's going to have a restaurant, youth center etc. and there is some talk of my favourite scholar (Abdal Hakim Murad - a very cool dude) being the lead imam.

Sounds like the coolest masjid in the UK.  Problem is the wbeardos will inevitably seek control, and give the place the atmosphere of a morgue.

Do the committee get elected in a democratic way?  Because if that is the case, then inevitably the religious/traditionalist folk (who are the ones who mainly attend the Mosque) will gain power. no

Not sure exactly how the bodies are elected at the mosque.

I hear it is a highly sophisticated process, they were recently thinking about bringing in a proportional representation system recently but it was vetoed under the consitutional amendment 34.6A.  If you need more information you will need to speak to the Mullah Malik, but unfortunately you will need to wait till he is extradited as he is undergoing a criminal investigation on corruption charges in the Punjab.

Out of curiousity, when you were a Christian did you struggle with the idea of the trinity?

    Hi,

Yes, this is what happen in a lot of mosque; the thing I can see also is that I don't find many happy Muslims even Fridays for the Juma'a.

    @Abuyunus2

I like sheikh Abdalhakim Murad to; I just hope that he stay like this and don't get influenced by Wahabbis.

I don't think there's any chance of Abdalhakim Murad being influenced by the Wahhabis.  The problem is that the Wahhabis will go around telling people that his beliefs are very unorthodox and he is trying to appease the West blah blah;  and this could make Abdalhakim Murad lose the support of the people.

Having said that, it seems to me that as long as Abdalhakim Murad preaches from the pulpit every Friday, the influence of the Wahhabis/Salafis will be limited.  Smiley

well, I said that I am praying, yes I did but since a long time now I didn't read the Quran; so many times it talk about "kuffar", about killing. The question of the fear is also  very present in the daily life and I guess is it an important point for those who left Islam.

so Did you read the whole quran or not ?
did you also read the hadith and sunnah or not ?

1 more thing don't fear anything that you can't see or don't have any facts about

IF YOU ARE NOT AN ATHEIST IM GOING TO BURN YOU IN HELL

does that make you afraid ? I suppose not. same thing with religion

I doubt he'll have the time, but what a project if he does get involved.  The muslim ummah need somebody like him.

btw did you ever get round to getting a response on your thoughts of the Quran from him?  i.e. it was a message for that time & place..  I wonder what his thoughts would be on that?
