GM food is actually very dangerous for our sensitive ecosystem and has caused a lot of problems for many farmers, animals and plants. Just like pesticides are harmful, especially if they're used like they are in India for example.

    Anywayyyyy

I hate people who believe and defend homophobia, sexism, misogyny, racism, supremacy and social injustice by trying to make it into something prettier than it is or give "fancy reasons" for their beliefs. Either you stand for what you believe, or you don't, but don't try serving me turd calling it chocolate ice-cream. It's insulting.

Since its off-topic to this thread, maybe we should discuss in another thread?

GM foods have many benefits that most of you know, some of which being increased crop yields and more resistance to herbicides. The problems with GM crops is poor management and implementation aswell as large companies have IP rights to seeds therefore farmers have essentially follow these companies who know have excessive control over crops. Monsanto is a notorious offender.

The problem with GM crops themselves however, is rather minimal. The scientific consensus after thousands of studies shows no adverse effects on humans and little horizontal gene transfer. Though, scientists will continue doing research and consensus may change.

GM seeds/food have been part of the business model of the agricultural powers in the west for decades. People are only now taking an issue due to reading the label on a can of soup. If you have ate anything produced in the west over the last 3 decades it was probably GM food. Farmers have been forced to buy GM seeds which are more resistant to diseases, pests and weather. These seeds yield a greater crop at harvest but at the cost of nutrients. We eat more food but not better food. These seeds crops are also engineered not to produce viable seeds for planting the next harvest so farms become return customers for seeding future crops. Modern man has lost thousand heritage seeds our ancestors once used for food so we rely even more on GM seeds. Heritage seeds are also expensive so farmers will farm low cost high yield crops rather than developing more of the natural food markets.

I grew up on a farm surround by farms of my relatives. It was a close community that helped neighbors in hard times or just with a harvest. The last time I was travelling through the area most of this farms have been replaced by corporate owned mega farms.

Again, these are not problems with GM crops themselves. It is the poor implementation and management and the amount of the control that large corporations such as Monsanto have.

On the idea that they're less nutritious, remember that GM foods have to undergo much more rigorous tests than non transgenic food. The overall scientific consensus is that they have little to none adverse effects to humans, have comparable nutritional values and do not have a large, devastating effect on the environment as some people would have you believe.

Yes, I agree.  The tools are in the hands of the ruling class, which in this case are American capitalist.  Not a surprise, but that's where most of the opposition in the "third world" comes from, peasant farmers who will be displaced by major American GMO producers.

I don't know why you're focusing on "health concerns" when opposition to GM crops is almost never with that.  Here's the actual opposition:

    http://truth-out.org/news/item/14775-mexican-farmers-protest-the-entrance-of-gmo-corn

And don't get me started on the idea that GM crops are some solution to world hunger.  The problem isn't lack of food, it's distribution.  Saying we lack enough food to feed the world is like saying we lack the money for Social Security...

And sure, we can start another thread.

GM crops are well known to have increased yield compared to non transgenic crops so yes they will increase global supply meaning more people can be hypothetically fed. Food distribution is a different issue.

On the food supply, fortunately, food availability is slowly increasing currently (a small part due to GM crops). Other important factors (such as decreasing population growth) would definitely help prevent worldwide food shortages.

You'll need to actually cite your sources.  Especially since GM crops have actually contributed to starvation.  Monsanto has terminator seeds that self-destruct after a year, for example.  And people wonder why we have starvation in the world.

We throw away enough food to feed the entire planet: http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/green-living/half-of-the-worlds-food-is-just-thrown-away-8445261.html  GM crops are just a means for corporations to further control the food supply, and techno-dicks have jumped in on it because it sounds all futuristic and sci-fiy.

Again, the current situation with GM crops is not idealistic because large companies have to much control. This has nothing to do with GM crops themselves who have increased yield due to resistance to herbicides, viruses and pests.

Partly, they are the worst when it comes to this but then again people in general are fucking useless-when someone is in a crises or needs help they'll offer a lot of words and bluster but won't make any efforts to help nor will they provide material assistance. Then suddenly 'oh no don't kill yourself-life will magically get better-your suffering is temporary life is long and here's some inspiring words from a facebook page I once read'. The authorities will put someone in prison to stop them from killing themself but they wouldn't give that same person a roof over their head or food to eat unless they had to.

On an unrelated note-I hate regret-it's hard to find a more useless emotion.

Sure they do. You know, until after it's born.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

People who try to use big words, but don't understand the word and end up using it completely out of context.  Especially in the exact same conversation in which they are calling themselves highly intellectual, and intimidating to others because of it.

I feel like there is a limit to how often I can reasonably correct them without it sounding like I'm just interested in criticizing them.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.
