I'm really ignorant about this but'

aren't electric guitars used to play different types of music than the type of guitar that Hassan has.

For some reason I can't picture someone playing soft lullabyish songs on an electric guitar.

You can create soft or harsh tones depending on how you use the Guitar's pick-ups. Distortion is also used a lot to create those harsh strong tones you hear in rock music, but then you could also have bright, soft tones with electric guitars too, used a lot in jazz. You guys play really well.

Quick question how long would it take for a beginner(me) to atleast play at a certain riffs. I'd love to be able to play wonderful tonight-eric clapton. I did start to learn, managed to get down the business with frets but never had the opportunity to carry on practising. Also whats better to practice on an electric with a pick or acoustic with fingers.

Depends on how much of a goon you are. But it is probably easier than you think.

It is a trade off between how likely you are to be discouraged and how easy it is to play. If you can handle it, the best thing to do is make it hard for yourself and play without a pick, on a really crap acoustic guitar. I hardly ever use picks because I could never find one when I started. Occasionally I will use an oyster card.

It depends how much you practice. I started learning in May last year and practiced for roughly 30 mins every day for the first 4 months. I made fairly good progress. But in September I became too busy I to practise so haven't really made any further progress since then.

Practice is the key - as it is to most things.

last time I picked up a guitar was a few years back, I got to a stage where I couldn't quite master the finger movements along the fret board so I basically set it aside. Might give it another go though, practise makes perfect, seeing as it took you around a year to get use to playing I can see myself giving it another go.

This is the guy I'm using to learn. So far, I would totally recommend using him if you are a beginner. He's clear, slow, and easy to follow. I watched a bunch of his stuff before I even bought Emily (that's my guitars name--after a second grade crush) and now that I'm trying stuff, I'm getting the hang of it.

I can tell it's gonna be a long road before I can do anything worth posting here, but I'm exited!

Since starting work, I've not played my guitar D: I'm never going to learn at this rate lol, I forget the stuff I learnt by the time I get around to practicing again.

Lovely guitar mate. Congrats. Personally I think it's much better to learn on an acoustic. You can always get an electric later if you want.

Yeah he's cool.  Stick at it and practice a little every day. The finger tip pain will get better eventually as you develop callouses.

Yeah you're right. I had to come to my senses and realize I didn't need an amp to make all the mistakes I'm bound to make. Lol. We gotta start our band the happy mustards!
