  • Hi!
     OP - August 03, 2010, 12:36 AM

I left Islam after 4 months. My family is all non-Muslim and they're so happy to have me back. I made the mistake of going to a Mosque for a report and talking about an interest. Next thing I know I had all these Muslims e-mailing me wanting me to join and I figured, "What the hell? It might not hurt." I was so wrong and regret the decision.

I was becoming increasingly unhappy; these Muslims told me to leave my family and friends since they were non-Muslim. My grandma before she left for a three week trip told me I should leave it. She'll be so happy about the news when she's back, I'm sure. It took me two weeks.

I had more of a story, but Mozilla was being dumb. If you want to hear it, e-mail me.

I live in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

I read an article before I "reverted" (tricked seems more like it) about a boy that turned Muslim (his dad was, his mom was Baptist) and he became the king pin of one of the African Muslim Militia (I can't think of the name now), so I asked someone from high school who was a Muslim to explain things, but in turn forwarded my e-mail to an "official" and I was invited to the Mosque. The imam glorified the religion and told me my Christian relatives would be recognized in heaven and that our media is dead wrong. They changed the Mosque service for me... I guess to trap me into the brainwashing.  Later that day I got e-mails to revert, well, you can read above.

At first the Muslims treated me nicely and said I didn't have to wear the hijab. I added my friend, Mohamed, and his wife on facebook along with her mother. It turned out they watched my every move. They came to a party at my house and I guess didn't like my family. I was told by them, other Muslims and various sites that I must leave my family, disrespect them and leave my non-Muslim friends. I did not support that. Last week I met with Mo and his wife, they told me to start Ramadan two weeks early since it was my first time and to fast for 4 hours... three times a day. That made me so sick... in fact, the halal diet made me sick and so tired and weak. His wife told me I must cover up because I'm too beautiful. I said no. Two days later I left the religion and told her mom. Her mom told the daughter, she ostracized me. I was deleted by everyone. I'm so glad I didn't leave my non-Muslim friends, even though I was so close. They have stood by my side. So have my parents. I can't wait to tell nan when she gets home. Everyone is so happy that I'm out.

Was it a bad sign that when I was practicing Islam it felt like my anti-depressants stopped working and I felt even more suicidal than before I was put on them?

Haha, that is true. I am still making up for my sucky 21st birthday on July 4!

I go to the casino in a few weeks for my mom's birthday.

My suicidal threats scared my non-Muslim friends. My Muslim friends ignored them. Go figure.

    Hi there pierced-beauty!

Glad to hear that you didn't cut ties with your non-Muslim friends and family while you were a Muslim.  Neither did I and I'm sure glad now that I've left Islam.

Your so-called Muslim 'friends' were never your friends.  They were only trying to score points with Allah by bringing you into the fold.  You're better off without them.

At first the Muslims treated me nicely and said I didn't have to wear the hijab.

Cult tactic 1: Tell the person they are already practically a Muslim/Jehova/etc and that there will be very little change to make in their life.  You can then get them to accept lots of individual small changes over a long period of time.

I added my friend, Mohamed, and his wife on facebook along with her mother. It turned out they watched my every move.

Cult tactic 2: Watch the person's every move so you can control what they do.  They do this a lot in Scientology, they make people "take you" lots of places.

I was told by them, other Muslims and various sites that I must leave my family, disrespect them and leave my non-Muslim friends.

Cult tactic 3:  Remove the new member from any "negative" outside influences who might be able to reach past the brainwashing and make you see reason.

His wife told me I must cover up because I'm too beautiful.

Cult tactic 4: Try to remove the new member's individual identity.

Two days later I left the religion and told her mom. Her mom told the daughter, she ostracized me. I was deleted by everyone.

Cult tactic 5: If someone cannot be controlled then the cult must get rid of them (ostracise in the west, kill them in Islamic countries) - this prevents the person who has seen reason from spreading their "dangerous" ideas to everyone else.

Looks like you experienced quite a few all in a short period Smiley

    Welcome to the forums!

You're very right. Now I see why my mother said she hated Catholicism (the religion I was born into... and no longer apart of) and Islam all the same. At least in Catholicism they didn't preach overt violence and they give you a choice for leaving. I wish I had listened more to my friends and family when I first joined. I'm glad it only took four months, though. I had a friend who it took a year of leaving, going back, and he has left for good and still has a lot of healing to do after being an apostate for a year.I'm really glad those Muslim 'friends' deleted me.

That's a great post TheRationalizer.  Afro

    I would add one more:

His wife told me I must cover up because I'm too beautiful. I said no. Two days later I left the religion and told her mom. Her mom told the daughter, she ostracized me. I was deleted by everyone. I'm so glad I didn't leave my non-Muslim friends, even though I was so close.

Cult tactic 6: Punish any apostates through ostracism (which I'm currently facing) to deter existing Muslims from even thinking of leaving the faith.  In Muslim countries, apostates face tougher punishments, of course.
