That's a great post TheRationalizer.  Afro

    I would add one more:
Cult tactic 6: Punish any apostates through ostracism (which I'm currently facing) to deter existing Muslims from even thinking of leaving the faith.  In Muslim countries, apostates face tougher punishments, of course.

I covered that in tactic 5.  I think ostrasisation is more to protect the religion than to punish the individual, religion doesn't care about the individual.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

    @TheRationalizer:
I was emphasising on the *deterrence* aspect of it (for existing cult members).  Smiley  You see, I've got lots of siblings who are still religious Muslims, and ostracising me is partly to deter them from leaving the faith.

    I hope you're safe.

    @peirced_beauty:
I'm safe, thanks. Smiley  I live in Britain.  I came out to my parents over 12 months ago and they haven't harmed me in any way.  The fact that they are still refusing to give me my Kenyan birth certificate bugs me a little, but I'm willing -- and perfectly capable -- of living my own life without their support.  Smiley  I kinda enjoy it really.  I can be a little crazy and adventurous.  Tongue

That's good. =] My dad's a deputy sheriff and non-Muslim, so I feel pretty safe as well. I'm so glad we live in the West.

In this thread: I learn there is a place called King of Prussia!

    How fucking awesome is that?

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

Haha. King of Prussia has one of the largest malls in America too. A few battles of the Revolutionary War were fought here.

Hi and welcome to the forum pierced_beauty.  Smiley

@ateapotist - can't you just apply yourself to Registration of Births, Deaths, Marriages etc. for a copy of your birth certificate?  Huh?

Possibly.  I have been looking into that recently,  after giving up trying to persuade my dad to return it to me.  In fact, I am giving up trying to maintain good ties with my parents.  I have given them enough time to accept my apostasy and it looks like it ain't gonna happen.  Oh well, fuck them.

Sure is nice to know I wasn't the only western woman that went thru that LOL.
Fortunately, my family knew Ive been on a "spiritual quest" my entire life, so
it didn't surprise them at all.  however, they WERE happy when I left, and resumed

Haha, indeed. My dad, the deputy here, was more worried I was going to turn into another Jihad Jane and have FBI agents show up here... which would soil his name. My aunts told my mom it was just a phase. I argued about that for a month. Thank goodness it was a phase.

I think a lot of Westerners are attracted to Islam because they feel alienated from their own culture.

Well I personally don't think it's got anything to do with religion in a lot of cases where white western women convert. More like overflated egos wanting some attention and converting to Islam is quite a provocative thing to do. An unfortunate by-product of the me-me-me society we now live in.  Roll Eyes

I'm sure there are also those who genuinely do feel alienated and want to find a God, as are those who may convert through marriage but I think they're pretty few and far between.

I'm non-religious. I do believe there is a god and I'm also starting to think that maybe there's a goddess too. Eh, I rather remain unaffiliated/ I was raised Catholic and didn't really like it. Islam actually felt worse than Catholicism.

Oh, yeah. And the first time I went to the mosque I felt very welcomed. I have had a lot of personal issues in the past regarding people and depression issues (taking meds now), so that welcoming feeling felt good. However, the religion itself made me more depressed.

I got that too. I was thinking, "Well, I'm suffering here. I don't think this is a test." I'm so glad they didn't tell me to stop taking the meds I'm on... at least I didn't get to that point yet.

Wow! I don't think I told them I was on meds... thank goodness. But, I did tell the one girl as I told her I wanted to leave Islam that I am majorly depressive and am on some serious medication. Then after I handed in my resignation and that little sentiment; her and her husband promptly blocked me.  Smiley

     Cheesy

I was probably considered a hopeless Muslim for a few days, now I'm kaffir status.

Last week when I went to dinner with Mo and his wife (before I came out of the closet... I was so depressed eating with them... I really didn't want to be in it anymore), they were talking Arabic. I don't understand a word of Arabic (yet... I am taking classes in the fall; I always wanted to learn). I wonder if they were talking about how they could control her life since when I handed in my resignation to her mother, her mother said she had a lot of plans for me. That still scares the shit out of me.

i didn't know you had to hand in a resignation.  I just split and never went back.
and they never called me again LOL.  I crept into the one chat room a few times,
as i had made some good friends, but we were already worlds apart by then, and i didn't
have the heart to tell them, so i just never went back there.  And they were kinda curious
why i wasn't going "alhamdullilah" or "mashallah" or "subhanallah" any more.  They
prolly suspected it, i just left.

or did you?  I have no doubt they had already bragged to everyone they knew
    how you converted.  wow

EDIT:  I had no idea how serious leaving islam was until some time after
    I left.

    That's probably because you're a Westerner.

Like you said, they were shoving any bad things under the rug.

And besides, in your case, they'd avoid the question of punishment with the "No True Scotsman".
