I know some people who are descended from apostates, does that count? One Pakistani Christian girl and one Indian Christian guy. I'm assuming they have some apostate (great) grandparents because the Pakistani's last name is Jalal while the Indian's last name is Esmail.

According to many scholars, you can leave Islam, it is actually more cultural like honor killing and such things. That's what I heard from some lectures like the ones from Abdalhakim Murad. To force people or to put fear on them will only create hypocrisy .

i think the majority opinion far and away is for the death penalty even today. pointing out a few scholars who say the death penalty is only applicable if the person is a political defector who poses a threat to the 'ummah' and not for someone who has lost faith doesn't cut it.

"threat to the Ummah" and "political defector" and " Misleading Muslims" are weasel words. They don't actually mean anything and someone can come along and put as harsh or as lenient of a rule in there as they want. I've heard opinions all over the map because of it. The more liberal ones say that as long as they don't pose a national threat to the Ummah as a whole kind of like treason then they are ok, and Ive heard that apostasy in one's heart is ok, but they have to act just like a Muslim and any kind of declaration of apostasy or failure to fulfill the rituals of a Muslim opens oneself to the possibility of the death penalty.
