But we know the brain also dies when we die.  To become aware are you assuming we are conscious when we are dead or we have a some kind of "soul"?

What is the point for babies who live for only a few hours, or even die in the womb?

What's the point for these babies? I didn't say there was a point, now did I? I didn't say there was a meaning to life, infact I said 'I think there's no one ultimate answer to the meaning to life..' I think currently people give their own lives meaning (like with religions or just living life etc). And all I said was WHAT I BELIEVE WILL HAPPEN AFTER DEATH and that it maybe possible to get a better understanding of 'the meaning of life' generations into the future where the people may have developed into beings of greater awareness.

Perhaps you should actually read my posts.

I aslo said that this belief i have is a wishy washy belief , which means it's vague, and it's only for my personal comfort.

I'm not taking this any further. Let's be honest with each other it's not like any of you really give a shit about my personal beliefs and frankly I can't be assed.

If you believe that's the truth, then why wouldn't you want to convince us? The whole point of discussions is to be more enlightened.

I didnt say you did.  I asked what happens to babies when they die, because you seem to believe there is an additional dimension after death, and I wonder what would be the point if it only lived for an hour and might not be able to comprehend or even be a point if it only lived for an hour.

could that be because there isnt one?

tbh it sounds a little silly to me, believing in something because you want it to be true, rather than because it is.  Reminds me of why many believe in a heaven or life after death. But at least they have something tangible like their scriptures to go off.

Conciousness is an extremely poorly understood concept and anyone who says otherwise is being pretentious.

Pretentiousness is an extremely poorly understood concept that involves consciousness ;P

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

This planet has developed a nervous system (through the internet/telecommunications) and now one could say that it has developed rudimentary consciousness. Tongue  This planet is now a complex organism.  Tongue

Your question is irrelevant. The fact that a baby dies at birth doesn't mean his/her life didn't have a purpose, nor does it mean life as a whole / existence doesn't have a purpose.

Also, I don't believe she ever said there's an additional dimension after death. She made it explicitly clear that humans are not conscious after death.

Is it wishful thinking to believe that the Earth is conscious?

From the link Prince Spinoza posted, which you didn't want to bother reading, or at least scanning through:

    Quote
Sentience. It may be conscious in the generic sense of simply being a sentient creature, one capable of sensing and responding to its world (Armstrong 1981).

In this sense, it's not far-fetched to say that the Earth is conscious. If we fuck it up, it will fuck us up. Example: climate change. The Earth seeks balance and harmony and will react if we disrupted that balance.

Is it self-aware and self-conscious (i.e. aware that it reacts)? Probably not.

This week on BBC Radio 4's Beyond Belief (30 minute) program:

    A secular meaning to life

Click to listen to the program:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00td8hl

    Quote
In this programme, Ernie asks whether there is a secular meaning of life and how this can be achieved without a shared reference to God or other higher spiritual figure. What is the basis of our morality and can there be any universally held, objective rules of right and wrong if there is no God?

Ernie and the panel hear from the writer, AN Wilson, who recounts his journey from childhood belief, through atheism and back to a constant, yet doubting faith in God.

In the second half of the programme, the panel discuss how a secular purpose to life is created and asks whether the purpose of life without God, can only be failure? In a secular world, have the terrors of hell been replaced by the terrors of failure? Can belief in God offer redemption where human capacity has failed?

The panel comprises Fergus Stokes who was once a Baptist minister and now is a humanist who practises psychotherapy; Dr Sue Blackmore, Visiting Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth and who is a Zen Practitioner; and Canon Dr Alan Billings, former director of the Centre for Ethics and Religion at the University of Lancaster.
