  • Pakistani youth giving up Islam?
     OP - September 06, 2010, 04:02 PM

    Quote
Islamabad:  A handful of Pakistani Muslim youths are beginning to question the existence of God and in the process giving up Islam to become atheists.

Still a small number, the trend seems to be telling of pressures that the image of militant Islam has had on them.

A Facebook group has been floated for Pakistan's agnostics and atheists by Hazrat NaKhuda, a former Pakistani Muslim.

At last count, the group had over a 100 members.

Great news.  Obviously the number of Muslims leaving Islam would increase significantly if the great taboo of questioning the religion in the first place wasn't so big.

Everyone has to be hush hush about questioning Islam, or do it anonymously on the internet, or tread on egg-shells...

I request my fellow Pakistanis to leave this stupid religion.  If this happens then the nation of Pakistan will prospher like India, and we'd have a great cricket team again too!

Because leaving Islam suddenly makes people awesome at cricket.  Roll Eyes

It was a light hearted comment at the time, but a serious point too and I stand by what I said.

The Pakistan cricket team was already good, but the increased religiosity of the players has contributed to their demise in form imo.  Praying and fasting became more important then practising and maintaining a healthy diet throughout the year.

I dont think thats true in my opinion. Theyre corrupt like the country is. But in the tests against England during Ramadan which I just watched, i saw Mohammed Yousuf, probably the team's most religious player atm, taking drinks at the drinks break

Given that this group has suddenly gained attention, and that too from Indian news outlets, I wonder how long before trigger-happy Pakistani Muslims start saying that the group is a fake set up by dirty Indian Hindus to defame the citadel of Islam, Pakistan.  wacko

Pakistani conspiracy theories (can we not defile the word "theory" by using it in such a way?)  are so insane and ridiculous,  it makes one wonder what sort of mind would be able to produce them.

If it was in England, he took some drinks because he's also traveling and don't have to fast these days...

i am not surprised. i have some friends in Pakistan who belong to the upper class and these kids have traveled and are very well educated. I haven't asked them straight out but these guys seem border line atheists to me. lets hope this war by the mullahs actually causes a lot of Pakistani youth to question their religion and leave it for good.

The mullahs don't take the threat of their power base eroding lightly.  We all remember how the ayatollahs reacted to - what seemed to be - the ever increasing liberalization of the population.

Maybe we could talk athiest.pk into bringing us some more COEM recruits from the Land of the Pure.   Afro

    hey guys,
I am the Hazrat NaKhuda referred to in that article.

and this article was a big a surprise for me wasn't really expecting it. I am kind of not happy with the indian media here. they should have at least asked me before putting in a direct quote from me.

I will try to answer some of the questions asked above.

The group is called Pakistani Atheists and Agnostics. We are planning on opening atheists.com.pk and we are also planning on getting this organization registered sometime in the future. The group has been made out to be more than it is (personal opinion)

    most of the members are
    1. educated (yes)
    2. well traveled (no half of them are and half of them including me have never been outside an Islamic country)
    3. Upper/elite class (no most of them are plain normal)

And before anyone asks me here. (I am saying that because a lot of people asked me this on facebook) No i am not doing this to apply for asylum anywhere.

Unfortunately, stuff on the Internet is considered public information, so media are allowed to take whatever they want.

It's good to see you here, although I see that you've been a member since June. Smiley

So how is it going with the group? Are you getting a hard time from anyone or is it all pretty low key still?

it is still pretty low key. i do get islamists trying to get into the group or send me messages saying how much of a moron i am and that i am not a Pakistani but a CIA trained, Mosad backed, Zionist, RAW agent trying to defame the land of the pure.
