  • Be careful what you say
     OP - September 22, 2010, 12:41 PM

As you know it is not difficult to receive a death threat from some fanatical Muslim.  I'm just writing to warn you all to be careful what you reveal about yourselves.

I typically avoid religious groups etc on facebook, but there are a few I have joined.  I use my full name on FB (in case people I know search for me), searching with this name on 192.com reveals my full address - even though I am not listed in the telephone directory and I have never given anyone permission to share my personal details.

So just a warning, make sure you don't reveal your full name.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

Very well said.  I worry about this too.  That's why I would never reveal my real name on this, or any other, forum.

I'm not and have never been a muslim but I never reveal my real name anywhere either, no-where, even facebook.   A good friend (who also happens to be an ex-muslim) taught me that when I first started with computers and the internet some 5 years ago and joined his forum.  Very good advice I've never forgotten.  Afro

I used to have two youtube accounts.  Someone spotted my face on the 2nd and then googled the username, it was pretty unique to me so they were quickly able to find my full name and contact me directly - a pathetic attempt to intimidate me.

It's the ones that don't threaten you first that you need to worry about.

I have already received my fair share of death threats, lawsuits etc etc to a point where I don't really care anymore. my skin has thickened enough and I'm not going to back off like Coward Pastor Terry Jones. Muslims: You got my name and phone number. Send me one more death threat and see if I wet my pillow tonight

If you are really not worried, then why did you remove your video?

In any case let us know what has happened since you posted it..

    @Rationaliza
If the person used 192.com or a similar service then they would have had to log the information request (assuming it was an electoral roll query), afaik. If so, you may be able to find out who requested the information by doing some detective work, potentially.

Also, be aware that your details will appear in the edited electoral roll for commercial use (aka. 192.com, et al) by default unless you opt out when registering to vote. Any existing information will already be held by private information vendors but you may be able to force removal by waving the data protection stick around, although doing this with every company who purchases the edited electoral roll might be a tad painful.

Good advice. I would add that it would be better to give out as little info about oneself as possible to limit the ability of pontentially dangerous people to "home in" on you by a process of deduction from a scrap of info here, a scrap there....

The person who found my information just wrote stuff like "Hello Mr X Y" on my youtube videos.  The person who outright threatened me didn't have that info and just wrote that if ever they found out my address they'd come to my house and kill me.

Unfortunately we aren't allowed to curl up snug with our rifles over here. If someone were to break in and we liberally applied a cricket bat about their noggin' it would likely be us who would be prosecuted rather than them. We instead retreat to our panic rooms which also double as wardrobes since our abodes are so woefully lacking in proportion.

It's not a worry for me, I don't need a gun, I'd happily hurt them with my bare hands (assuming I'd win of course.)  When you have a wife and 4 children though you have to take their welfare into consideration, and me speaking out against religion really scares my wife.  It's terrible that this should be the case.

I post a lot of my info online.. But ah, no threats yet. No one ever tried to knock at my door. Only one guy on naseeb asked me to provide him my address so that he can send police at me and file a lawsuit for religious violations..  Cheesy

Anyways, I don't keep landline. Only VOIP and cell that never makes it to 411.

I remember in the 90s when the internet was an insecure place and many providers had broken remote access servers that exposed info to the world so it was very easy for me to get their users listing and figure out subscriber data of a given IP number ^_^

But, being a wannabe greyhat hacker, I only did that against people who committed cyber-mischief ;P
But it was fun to make the internet thugs crap their pants :S
