Does anyone have a URL to this video? It might not be the burning that is considered racial hatred but what they say.

My defence in court would be simple: "I didn't burn the Quran, it was in English, therefore I only burned an interpretation of the meaning of the Quran"

Idiots. But what exactly are they going to charge them with? And doesn't this risk bringing attention to them beyond their wildest dreams?

Officers detained two men on September 15 and four more yesterday and all six were bailed pending further inquiries, Northumbria Police said.

''The arrests followed the burning of what are believed to have been two Korans in Gateshead on September 11,'' the spokesman said.

In a video still accessible on YouTube, six young men in hooded tops or wearing scarves over their faces can be seen pouring petrol on a book and setting it alight, before burning another.

On the video, which appeared to have been filmed behind a pub, they cheer as the first book bursts into flames.

Northumbria Police said the men were not arrested for watching or distributing the video, but on suspicion of burning the Koran.

Gateshead Council and the force issued a joint statement to stress that community relations in the area were good.

It said: ''The kind of behaviour displayed in this video is not at all representative of our community as a whole.

''Our community is one of mutual respect and we continue to work together with community leaders, residents and people of all faiths and beliefs to maintain good community relations.''

The men may have been copying Florida-based Pastor Terry Jones, who caused an international outcry by threatening to burn the holy book on September 11, although he did not go ahead with the plan.

What the fuck? "Inciting racial hatred"? Islam isn't even a fucking race! I thought this was a free country, for fuck's sake. I think burning anything is a pretty moronic form of protest, but even I acknowledge the right to do so peacefully. This is just fucked up.

To be quite honest I think these guys are a bunch of pricks, but there is nothing illegal in what they did. If they are prosecuted then I will be really tempted to burn a Quran myself as a protest against the inequality of it.

I think it will be cited as inciting racial hatred. And I can't get my head around how they can get them for anything, unless their speech in the video is construed in that way.

As much as I detest their actions, it could be a propaganda bonanza for them, same as the Nick Griffin trial. If they go down for it, they'll take the mantle of martyrs and fly with it.

Surely armanduk is some kind of phoney troll.

Anyway, saw this on the news, and they interviewed a guy from the local madrassa / mosque. I had sympathy for him, because this kind of thing in a local context can easily be intimidating. He talked about how reassured he was that the authorities had dealt with things in this manner, said that Islam was THE religion of peace after all, and then I tuned out as I watched, in the background, children aged around 9 or 10 years old, girls in hijab, rocking back and forth reciting from the Quran.

What a load of bull shit. Frankly, it tempts me to get as many "Holy" books as I can. Yeah, Get a Bible, a Koran, the Book of Mormon, the Talmud, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, the Theravada,as well as Vedas, and burn each one, while roasting marshmallows... and singing some nonsense song about "gods" not striking me down. And making a vid of the whole thing.

Just to be irritating.
