My grandpa, who worked in the mines as a young man, took me to see this movie back in 1987, and it made me pro-union and want to be a union organizer. Forgot about the union stuff for a while until the late 90s. Today, well, I'm a union organizer. Always wanted to contact John Sayles just to say thanks.

So the rest of ya-- got a movie that genuinely impacted the direction of your life?

    fuck you

    Animal Farm
    To Kill a Mockingbird
    Atlas Shrugged

Although I havent had a decent read for while.  Am I highjacking this thread?

Took long enough to get a serious reply on this thread-- too bad it's a movie that inspired you to be capitalist slime Tongue

Anyhow, post a scene you think sums up the movie for you and what you got from it. And if it's the Tom Cruise singing alone in his underwear part, so help me... Snap out of it

When i get back home and log on to web, i will do that.

    American History X.

It was a film which showed me the intensity of racism that I had never known of and the raw passion which fuels both Edward Norton and Edward Furlong's performances I have never seen in a film since. Plus that curb scene was absolutely chilling for me as a kid. It drove home to me for the first time how fucked up humanity can really be, and it pretty much burst my middle class bubble.

No movie changed my life.  Books have, and as cheesy as it was, it was the da vinci code.  It might be fantasy but it was read at te right point in my life as it triggered my search for the truth about the quran.

Eh, too many to list. Movies are such a massive part of my life and have inspired and influenced me in so many ways. It was certainly movies that were a big part of what inspired me to pursue martial arts. I could probably trace a line from watching Bruce Lee movies to studying the philosophy of Morihei Ueshiba, Takuan Soho, many others. The movies of Akira Kurosawa in particular, made me actually pick up a sword and learn how to use it, which has been an incredible boon in my life. And his movies also made me fall in love with the art of film, one of my fullest passions.

While maybe not life changing, there are so many other life affirming movies for me. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Moon, Good Will Hunting, Taxi Driver, Sunshine, Trucker, Precious, The Brave One, Singles, Candy, This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape (I can't tell you how much I loved and still love Leonardo DiCaprio). And you know, I'm gonna add some that will destroy any credibility I have, Dirty Dancing, Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands, Moonwalker, because they meant so much to me growing up. Mermaids is the most embarrassing film to say you love, but luckily I don’t get embarrassed. And one of the earliest memories of me thinking religion was bullshit was me watching that movie, which gives it a certain kind of sentimental worth. I had such a massive crush on Winona Ryder too.

Most recently, the movie Hereafter. I'm still feeling the effects of that one. I was in tears in the first 10 mins. The opening sequence is just brutal. It made me short of breath. The whole cinema felt it too I reckon. Really gave perspective and clarity to recent real world tragedies. It's a fascinating movie about death. Sounds depressing, and some of the movie really and truly is utterly depressing. But it's also humanity laid naked. It's a raw film with so many flaws, but also beautiful and motivating.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

I guess recently The Fighter. For the last couple of years I kept telling myself I'm gonna get fit again, I'm gonna get fit again - but never in the end did anything serious about it. But after watching this film, for a month or so now been working out properly - boxing once a week (punchbag and speedbag in my garage), football once a week, and weights 3-5 times a week. Can't wait to get back in shape again!!! and kinda sad but true - this film was my inspiration.

    Nightmare on elm street....

I watched it when I was 7 and was scared of the dark intensely until I was 10, and vaguely until mid teens  whistling2.

    JFK...

This movie blew me away, it opened up the importance for me of questioning the media's presentation and government actions. To this day I have an deep distrust of the 'official' story.
