    Yeah, my dad gets internal memos and updates every day. In fact ASDA has a whole underground "Muslims customers marketing and welfare unit". Their guy would visit each Muslim house in the area door to door to inform them about new Halal products.

    Nobody is required to watch the videos. I think they can stay. Anyone who can't handle the preview images needs to toughen up IMO.

    Not to mention (as I already have on a previous thread on the same subject) that larger animals such as cows can have blood vessels at the back of the neck which provide enough residual blood to the brain to keep the animal conscious as it bleeds out.

    I saw a documentary on BBC1 a couple of years back about kosher butchers and accreditors. There are rabbis who are specially trained to go round the country and certificate food suppliers. One of them drove up to Scotland and went to a salmon farm to make sure everything was done in a certain way and it was to do with the implements used, which couldn't be cross contaminated with utensils used for non kosher stuff.

    They showed a kosher abattoir and the slaughterer had special knives and was trained specifically for one action, the cutting of the throat of the animal, which took place as lines in Hebrew were spoken. I'm pretty sure he said that for kosher the animal cannot be stunned. Also, the actual slaughter took place behind a curtain of some kind, which he reached behind, before doing the deed, then putting the knife in water to clean it of blood, although the curtain could have just been there because of the camera, to spare showing the actual moment of slaughter. And this kosher slaughterer was very efficient, and the knife he used was the sharpest thing this side of a Japanese samurai temple.

    I'm just trying to pin you down on the level of organisation an organism would need before you attached any ethical consideration to our conscious killing of it for any purpose.  How would War on a disease spreading rodent  equilibrate to War on other humans over territory, for instance.

    Well as I said to Teh Bovine via PM, I was eating breakfast while catching up on this thread. Those pictures didn't even make me slow down. Still enjoyed my breakfast. See what the rest of the staff think, but personally I'm not inclined to worry about it.

    Yes I understand that. Mind you, in some ways I would disagree with it. Still, the ability to suffer is likely to be a sliding scale rather than a black and white dichotomy. People like to construct dichotomies because they make life simpler, but they're rarely totally accurate in reality.
