He is a model of what Islam can do to something beautiful, tender and unique. One of the greatest singer-songwriters this country has ever produced, converted to Islam, and utterly destroyed what he used to be, and his natural, innate, special talent, for the sake of Islam. A common story - Islam makes these demands. Destroy what makes a human a human, his individuality and uniqueness, in order to purge him of his prior Muslim self. He has chilled out since. But this initial stage of his conversion is a horror story.

He used to drink, take drugs, etc.  Now he calls for the execution of novelists on TV.  Oh how Islam has changed him for the better.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

When he came back to music, he gave an interview saying to effect that he regretted how harsh he had been towards his music when he first converted to Islam. The zeal of the convert, and all that.

But look at George Harrison. When he became a Hare Krishna he didn't have to erase his identity, his very essence as a person and musician, in order to be acceptable to his new spiritual path.

I think this aspect of Islam is really, deeply disturbing.

I remember reading something about him not agreeing that homosexuality should be taught as acceptable in schools or something. I found it a bit sad that a person who could have previously been open-minded had actually allowed a religion to dictate how he thinks of people. I liked some of his old songs, though.

God Is the Light is a pretty song (after he became Muslim). It makes me sad his transformation, though. =[

    Word up, MAB

I too am wary of his beliefs, but to hell with what he believes now, he wrote some excellent songs. Wagner was probably anti-semitic; doesn't mean that people should judge his music by the fact that he was a loon.

But regarding his beliefs, I saw that documentary on his conversion to Islam and  when the part about the Salman Rushdie affair came up, it was made to seem as though the only thing that had happened was that the media had taken what he said 'out of context' and caused the thing to be totally over blown.

But of course, the offending footage was not shown in the documentary, and it's quite clear that he did say some frankly reprehensible things. Smacks of dishonesty to me.

But, seriously, reading the wikipedia article on the Satanic Verses, I don't see why it was a big deal... the verses are in the Qur'an and have been described as that. I guess I'm going to just have to read it when I get time.

Well he is the one who started Islamia school to brain wash little kiddies it is a little more open that other school but still the head scarf is part of the uniform.
As well there have been allegation of sexual abuse by some staff like in another school where my kids have been for one year.
I hope his son will drag him out of the religion kids can be an eye opener.  yes

If you consider the sentimental mush of Yusuf Islam artistically superior to the coruscating prose of Rushdie's Midnight's Children, you are quite welcome to your aesthetic judgement. I don't begrudge it, but let it be known that until this mountebank weeps hot tears of remorse for his revolting past, as long as fawning sycophants pay him unmerited homage some of us who honour the beauty of the written word shall raise a voice in protest. Quacks like him should not be acclaimed; they should be railroaded into jail for inciting murder. In conclusion I hope I haven't said anything to prejudice Mr Yusuf's case.

Rushdie is a wonderful writter and most muslims who protested against him never read his work a few I know who did distanced themselves with the fatwa which was absurd anyway.
Cat Steven was no litterary genius he had nice tracks a complete different league but pleasing to the ears.
