  • Long hair ?
     OP - October 11, 2010, 05:15 AM

Does anybody else from Muslims families have a ruling that women must grow their hair long ?  I have heard slightwhispers from a few scholars I do know of that women should not have cut their hair ? So I was never allowed to cut mine and it is extremely long ! Which is difficult to style and just manage , I got in a lot of trouble with my panrents over when I for the first time had my fringe cut but not the length shortened ?   I do not like the impression very long hair like this gives off , as if I cannot bother to get it cut , I am conufsed !  wacko
I think if it could be found that this is not Islamic in ruling my parents will not have problems if I cut my hair .

I never heard of anything that says you can't cut your hair at all. Only that you shouldn't have a men's hair style. And it's healthier for your hair if you at least trim it every once in awhile.

Thank you for your information , we have been allowed to trim the hair enough to pretend we are not being crazy about it .   I recall a mention of not allowing to have hair of different lengths , does this have basis in Islam ?

In many mid-east cultures, short hair is considered masculine and long hair considered feminine, perhaps that's the foundation of the claim.

Hi Dr@gon Sl@yer my family is hanfi thanks very muchf ro the link .
However I would deinfitely like layers and a fringe or hairstyles I could vary at whatever time which is not allowed from this hadith :
It is not permissible for a woman to cut her hair short in the back and leave the sides longer, because this involves disfiguring and fooling about with her hair which is part of her beauty, and it also involves imitating the kaafir women. This prohibition also applies to haircuts which are named after kaafir women or animals, like the “Diana” cut, named after a kaafir women, or the “lion” cut or “mouse” cut, because it is haraam to imitate the kaafirs or to imitate animals, and because that involves fooling about with a woman’s hair which is part of her beauty.

There is no hadith here. This fatwa makes almost no sense islamically as well, because imitation of nonmuslims is in beliefs or something exclusive to them.

Ask for evidence, a fatwaa is not evidence.

You are allowed to remove your armpit hair, but you are to pull out the hair.  mysmilie_977

I always wondered why you could shave the pubic region, but you must pull out the hair in the armpits.

    Quote
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said "Five things are in accordance with Al fitra (i.e. the tradition of prophets): to be circumcised, to shave the pelvic region, to pull out the hair of the armpits, to cut short the moustaches, and to clip the nails.' (Book #74, Hadith #312)

What gets me regarding this conversation is that although in some schools of thought a Muslim woman cannot cut or trim her hair she is then expected to shove the whole mass up under a headscarf.

When I still had long hair and wore hijab I didn't have the time to blow-dry my hair in the morninings because it was so thick so I ended up just letting it air dry a bit, tying it back and then putting on my hijab.  After a hot, muggy day of sweating in my hijab with already damp hair my head was pretty ripe by the time I took my scarf off when I got home in the evening!

On another note I generally find that the fatawa regarding women not being able to cut their hair, period, come from more Deobandi inspired mufti's such as Mufti Ibrahim Desai who generally come from S.Asia where culturally women do not cut their hair, regardless of whether they are Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Xtian, etc... Just a thought.

It is always such a pain , it is almost impossible to straighten the whole thing and anything else I do to it, due to the sheer volume, looks riduculous.
Yes I think you might have a good point about it being a Deobandi tradition , my father is a big supporter and as Indians it is generally accepted to follow the imams of the deobandi sorts of mosques.
