I think Karamazov and Notes from Underground are my favourites by him.

EDIT: Oops, someone else posted in the meantime. I meant by Dostoevsky. I’ve not read any Hobbs. What would you recommend as a starting point Berbs?

It’s what he’s best at, nevermind the horror. However, I do recall reading The Stand when I was about 14. Incredible experience. I need to read it again. It’s been too long.

I'm reading Robin Hobb The Inheritance

I've only (so far) read the Farseer trilogy by her. It was alright, though she lost me at some points halfway through book two, and at the end of the last one. Supposedly her writing improves later one. How is Inheritance?

I'm currently reading Mika Waltari's The Egyptian. Or well, the abridged translation.

I know the farseer one is supposed to be popular but my favourite of hers are The liveship books and the The Soldier Son Trilogy (especially the forest mage, which is just so different and unique as a story, as is the main character).

I'm also enjoying the rainwild collection which are her new set of books that follow on from the liveship ones.

The inheritance is alright so far, but I think the soldier son trilogy was my favourite of all her books.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I'm currently 40% of the way through Steve Jobs's biography by Walter Isaacson.

I didn't know too much about the man before reading this, but after seeing all the hoo-hah surrounding his death I decided to give it a shot. Steve Jobs as a person, comes off as a petulant, narcissistic, bullying, unstable, dogmatic man-child. He was extremely difficult to work with, which unsurprisingly led him to be forced out of Apple. (this description is only accurate up to the late 80s/early 90s, I haven't read far enough to make judgement of his character in more modern times)

I didn't know too much about how Apple started off and what his early achievements were. I was really surprised by how instrumental he was to modern computing as a whole, not just the Apple side of things. He may not have invented much but his main strength was his vision and desire for perfection. When he first came across an early mouse he immediately recognised its importance and he simplified its design, made it cheaper and incorporated it into the Graphical User Interface he was developing for the first Macintosh. The modern GUI used on most computers, to this day, is based on Steve and his team's ideas. Another thing I didn't know was his involvement with Pixar which he held 70% stake in. It was at first an extremly unsuccessful venture and was haemorrhaging money, yet he continued to pump money into it because it brought out his passion for art. Lucklily for Jobs, his persistence paid off and Pixar became successful with the release of Toy Story, 9 years after it was founded.

I've enjoyed reading about Jobs so far, he's an incredibly tragic, deep, and flawed character. I'd recommend this to anyone who is remotely interested in tech/gadgets.  Afro

Another thing about Steve Jobs is that he could be downright...weird at times. He felt that he didn't need to shower because he followed a "fruitarian" diet which according to a book he read meant that he didn't produce BO. When people confronted him about the fact that he stank he wouldn't listen. He was extremely stubborn and dogmatic like that. Eventually they convinced him to shower every week. Fucking hippie.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

A Glorious Defeat: Mexico and Its War with the United States
    http://www.amazon.com/Glorious-Defeat-Mexico-United-States/dp/0809061201

    Quote
The war that was fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 was a major event in the history of both countries: it cost Mexico half of its national territory, opened western North America to U.S. expansion, and brought to the surface a host of tensions that led to devastating civil wars in both countries. Among generations of Latin Americans, it helped to cement the image of the United States as an arrogant, aggressive, and imperialist nation, poisoning relations between a young America and its southern neighbors.

In contrast with many current books that treat the war as a fundamentally American experience, Timothy J. Henderson offers a fresh perspective on the Mexican side of the equation. Examining the manner in which Mexico gained independence, Henderson brings to light a greater understanding of that country’s intense factionalism and political paralysis leading up to and through the war. Also touching on a range of topics from culture, ethnicity, religion, and geography, this comprehensive yet concise narrative humanizes the conflict and serves as the perfect introduction for new readers of Mexican history.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?
