  • A "hi" from Vietnam
     OP - November 06, 2010, 07:20 AM

Hi everyone! i'm from Vietnam, a country that is mostly known from "The Vietnam war", the war that sometimes are compared to Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan war. I'm not an ex-muslim or muslim, my interests in philosophy, religion, science,...had led me to this site. There are some tiny muslim communities in my country, most of them are Cham people, a primary ethnic of the late Champa, a land we took over more than 100 years ago.
I was raised by non-believing parents, although they keep worshiping our ancestors, my late grandparents, my siblings, who died in the war for tributes rather than suppertious reasons. Because of our culture, I estimated 95% of population are believer with 40% are Buddhists, 6% are Christians (most of them are Roman Catholics, others are Protestan), some Muslim's minorities, some are Caodaism,...... the remains are Luong's people, who are similar to my parents, but they're very superstitious. Some people claim they are atheists, but they don't even know the definition of atheism, several people just adapt atheism from the commusism, socialism ideology, some people, like my parents state they are atheist because they did'nt find any reason that God exist. Although, they still believe superstitious things, even some government leaders. Because of our long historical country, some religions are mixed with others, for example, buddhists, catholics still worship their ancients or Luong's people somtimes visit church, temple to pray for happiness, money,... Muslim communities are so small in numbers, it's hard to recgonize them, they're also isolated from Islam community worldwide,  Malaylasia, Indonesia, our neighbours, is the only way to interact with others, some Muslim followers must fly abroad to gain their religious degree in Malaysia, Indonsesia universities.
It's hard to find an aposate in our country because most religious people feel religion is a relief from sufferings by our tyrannical, dictatorial government.
On aspects of religion, I think i'm a atheist, i don't like any form of religion, organized or disorganized, monotheistic or polytheistec. Religions is just the effects of Evolution, humanity have to give up religion to advance in the future.
From philosophy, theology points of view, I think i'm a agnostic, the answer of the question "Do God exist?" is out of our ability, that i deduce from Godel's completeness theorem. Of couse, science can't explain everything but the more researches, the less supernatural.
Like ex-muslims, beginning i've really believed communism, socialism, but when i grew up, i found they're all lies.....................................

(I want to write something more but with my limited English, it's a great difficulty, thank for your patience with my poor English, I'll tell more in the future.) thnkyu

    Hi!

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Is it like praying to God? Like when Christians, Jews and Muslims pray to God. Or is it something different?

    1) I think it is a good thing in a person to take 180 degree changes in their views for the better. It is healthy to have an open mind that learns.

    2) You're English is superb and it was fluent to read.

No, it 's different! On special days (new year, death anniversary,..), we celebarate our ancestors, late relatives,..to recommend family members don't forget them. While Christians, Jews and Muslims pray God for their advantages.

I believe religion still have good side and bad side! Some teachings contain very good messages! But religious people have translated these messages badly!

No, in fact they are always trying to do the opposite.  The religions were meant to say that, its the translators who have always tried their best to lessen the effects

The good side that you talk of doesn't need religion at all. If you claim to be a decent human being then you will necessarily have all the good qualities that all the religions  advertise. The time wasted in prayers and rituals can be used for doing good deeds to alleviate human problems, rather than waiting for some divine miracle, which will never happen!

Welcome. It's always enriching to see the perspective of someone from a country that gets very little coverage in the West. If you don't mind, I have a few questions:

    1. How old are you?

    2. Your English is very impressive; at times more articulate than some UK natives. What was your education like? Also, how common is it to find English speakers among the native population?

    3. Like you mentioned, when we hear the word "Vietnam" what usually comes to mind is the war, followed by noodle dishes, bad war movies and rice farmers in conical hats. Do you ever get annoyed by the Western media's portrayal of your country?

    4. To turn things around, how is the West perceived nowadays by the majority of Vietnamese people you've encountered?

    5. From your post it seems like superstition in culturally ingrained in Vietnamese society, regardless of religious affiliation. Is this accurate? If so, can you give some examples of how these superstitious beliefs surface in everyday life?

Sorry for all the questions; it's just that we don't get to hear from many freethinkers in Southeast Asia. Enjoy your stay here.
