    It's not uncommon for the majority of citizens in a given country to be unhappy with their current government.  This is especially so under miserable economic conditions.  Does this mean that citizens of these countries should oust all the politicians?  No, in a democracy, you vote in or out a government.  In many cases, the choices aren't great, and a change is not going to be for the better.

    That means they want some kind of shared government since it seems to be the only practical solution under the circumstances.  I don't think that means they want to go back to a brutal 6th century theocracy where women are covered in bags and confined to their homes.  Is that what you'd want?  I'll wager that if you and your brainwashed bf lived there, he'd be very satisfied with that kind arrangement.

    Well done starting this poll Spinoza. I would have had to include a "Fuck You" option which would have drawn most of the responses of those here who don't like to think about such questions.

    He did include it, a 'Fuck DH' option which became so popular it skewered the results rendering the poll irrelevant and useless. It was removed in order that the poll could be administered correctly.

    They want Shariah Law, but dont know what it entails. - the question in the article would have been interpreted as "Do you think UK would be a better society with more Islam". 

    Its a conscience vote that I doubt they would put into practice if they knew what they were signing for e.g. murdering apostates & gays. 

    Reminds me a bit like how wrong the opinion polls were when the Tories came in the time before last - they were to ashamed to admit what they really wanted, but when it came to the crunch they voted differently.

    You do realise there is no universal Shariah Law, and it and a lot of it will depends on how the respective Cleric or individual interprets the sciptures, dont you?

    There's many interpretations of shariah law DH. From the 'version' that existed in Al-Andalus (easily the most secular of its time!) to the harsh puritanical idiocy of the mullahs in Afghanistan.

    Sharia is the assertion that human societies can and should be organised according the precepts of divine law. Immutable divine law. Its insidious no matter what form it takes. It can never be 'secular', unless like many Islamic impulses, 'secularism' has to be co-opted by Islam.

    Exactly. There are 'islamists' that accept democracy (muslim brotherhood) those who reject it but don't use violence (hizb ut tahrir) those who are sort of patriotic (hezbollah) and there are individuals like my bf who don't agree or disagree with any such groups entirely.

    They only accept democracy in the sense that they think it should be used to gain power and then dispose of it and impose Islamic rule. Its basically just a different time frame for cutting your throat.

    I think we should be glad they've stuck at it for so long despite seeing what has happened in algeria and palestine. But recently the jordanian branch withdrew from the elections there. Lets hope they remain peaceful in their 'struggle'

    Yeah, the 'struggle' to impose Islam as an all encompassing system for human governance and theological dictatorship over societies, as a manifestation of the very meaning and purpose of Islam. Lets hope they stay peaceful.

    It's interesting to watch the evolution of Islamist groups.  It's like different species with different strategies of survival and propagation.
    • Groups like the Muslim Brotherhood use democracy to gain power, but there's no doubt that they are Islamists and want to apply divine law when they get into power.  This group has survived for a considerable period of time because they are not too reckless/radical/violent, so they are tolerated to an extent.  This is their strategy for survival.  They are very patient and far-sighted.  They are also very secretive and disciplined.  And it would be fair to say they consciously practice Taqiyyah.
    • Groups like Hiz-ut-Tahrir are not very secretive and try to recruit from university campuses etc very actively.  They also do not use violence as a means to gain power.  This group has been more successful than the Muslim Brotherhood at gaining followers but they have not achieved much (else) so far.
    • Groups like Al-Qaeda use violence and terror to rally the Muslims and gain followers, and perhaps instigate political change.  But they don't tend to last very long.  Their strategy for survival is ... well... difficult. lol   They do, however, rattle the rulers in both Muslim countries and the West while they last.

    That was the "secular" sharia that applied The Death Penalty to "Insulters" of Islam and had women dressing like this:
