    I find most post-rock to be incredibly dull, soulless and pretentious. Neu and This Heat accomplished a similar task (insofar as texturality is concerned) in the 70s with much greater aplomb. Tortoise and Godspeed are fantastic though.

    I literally have no idea what you're talking about. Post-rock is one of the most soulful and emotional genres ever. And there's hardly anything pretentious about it; it's incredibly accessible and beautifully simple.

    1) most, not all, post-rock. I happen to own quite a few Mogwai, Godspeed and Tortoise records.
    2) By soulless I mean the bands have no personality. Everyone's either ripping off Neu! or Tortoise, or Mogwai, or Godspeed, or Swans...

    Drawing on metal, punk, industrial, musique concrete and the avant-garde, whilst still retaining the visceral physicality of rock music. A lot of post-rock might as well be called music for films and awkward one night stands (with guitars...)

    King Crimson were also superb exemplars of what could be called (post)rock. I'm particularly thinking of Robert Fripp's guitar technique which owes more to 20th century classical than it does the blues.

    Fantastic, utterly fantastic band BTW. Definitely up there for me with Throbbing Gristle, Soft Machine, and Can.

    King Crimson was truly an amazing band as much as Throbbing Gristle is. Innovative and interesting music.

    You don't get to define genres the way you like. This isn't post-rock. I heard a couple of seconds and thought that this seems to be a mixture of post-punk and industrial rock. And sure enough, after some research, I found the band characterized under both—but not post-rock.

    Now just enjoy the music or make your own thread.

    The irony being that Post-rock was a genre term conceived by Simon Reynolds. Like Neurofunk.

    I like you. You make me laugh, and (very occasionally) talk sense.

    The only band mentioned so far that I really like are Neu!. (I get a kick out of that !. combo.)

    Swans - mighty impressive but unlovable.

    King Crimson - chilly, twiddly, unlikeable (despite my sneaking fondness for Court of the Crimson King).

    I'd moved from rock into the lusher Latin pastures by the time Mogwai and Godspeed came along, but I'll check them out. Rave Tapes is playing at the moment...

    Years ago I made a demo tape. It was okay, and someone at Brian Eno's label was very keen till he got sacked or something. But its chief problem was that it didn't fit into any genre known to man, Google or even Abood.
