  • How do you browse CEMB?
     OP - December 16, 2010, 10:01 PM

I always look at the "Recent Posts" on the left side menu and see if a thread catches my eye and looks intresting. I also sometimes go to "Show my recent posts" under my avatar on the top left side of the page.

So tell us how browse the forum?  bunny

I also look at the 'recent posts'

sometimes I scan the 'religion' and 'science' sections, but not too often.

I like the "recent posts" more because usually the posters are still online, so it's almost like a chat.

Back when I was a CEMB noob, I used to manually go through each sub-forum, lol.

Right after logging in, I click on "show unread posts" first, and scan through all the thread titles and click on any that catches my eyes.

Once I'm here for a while, I check on the left side pane for active threads.

My standard procedure is login > check staff boards (the indicators on the board index will let me if there's anything new in them) > check the QPS board (ditto) > check replies to my posts > then either go to unread posts or just pick stuff out of the recent posts column at the left, depending on my mood.

When I'm in the middle of a session it's a combination of the recent posts column and the unread posts function. As RIBS noted, the recent posts is handy for fast-moving conversations.

Oh yeah, and of course I check my PM's for pissy messages from Eph so I can send her rude responses.  dance

ETA: Oh and the unread posts and the unread replies functions totally rock IMO. Every forum app should have them (but they don't). I find phpBB forums a nuisance to use largely because they lack these functions. vB can do unread posts if you install a mod (which you have to pay for, on top of paying for the vB license. Meh).

I search the archives a lot too.  Nothing creepy or stalkerish yet,  I just query topics and keywords of interest that may have already been discussed.

If that's what you call rude, you'd better try practicing some more. You're getting soft. cool2

how i browse: i click some thread that catches my eye and skim through it, replying only if i see my name. Usually i double check each page by doing a quick search for any mentions of myself (ctrl-f)

I don't have a strategy yet, but I do rely on:
    The Recent Posts
    Replies to my posts
And every couple of days I open and scan all sections of the forum in different windows and open any topic of interest in tabs.

I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...

I rarely browse the forum. Most of the time when I have time to do forum stuff (usually only 30-40 minute chunks), I only have access on my phone and it's much faster to read emails on my phone than browse the website. So I have notifications of new topics and replies emailed to me, and I read most threads from email. I only open the forum if I want to post or if a thread sounds interesting and I want to enable notifications for it but I don't have time to post (posting automatically enables notifications).

And this reminds me of an admin request I made awhile ago. Can new topic email notifications include the username of the poster? Topic reply notifications do, but not new topics. If I know who the poster is I might have a better idea of whether I want to read the topic or just delete the email.

Should be possible, if I remember to look into it. I never use notifications myself so haven't bothered checking the code behind them.

I go through each sub forum separately... easier to keep track of things... then I lurk on the who's online page.
