    I understand your point. I'm not sure you understand mine. Basically, you start a thread that you expect will offend quite a few people, and the thread is about how we shouldn't offend people. This is a quandary, yes?

    Osmanthus: Not sure what a quandary is. Perhaps a contradiction? In that case, I will say you answered the question yourself (will offend quite a few people) and when I said will piss a lot of people off I meant a lot of you guys, members of CEMB. Should I have said a few people? What would have been a better thread title in your opinion?

    The title isn't the issue. I'm just saying that starting a thread that you expect will be offensive is rather amusing when your subject matter is that we should not offend people.

    Anyway, leaving that aside, the problem with not offending religious people is that they are wonderfully resourceful when it comes to finding ways to be offended. It is difficult to have an honest conversation with them without causing some offence somewhere along the line.

    If every single person asked every single other person to silence themselves because of "hurt feelings" then nothing would be said.

    And, as God is just a product of human thought (the idea of God being simply speculation), I don't think I need to refrain from saying what I want to say about God. What if the God I am criticising is different to the God that you believe in? Should I then not be able to criticise my own God, or the product of my own thoughts?  Huh?

    I was asking you for examples so we could find out what your definition of offensive is.  As others in the thread have pointed out,  such things are subjective.

    Why shouldn't we insult God? If he exists then I'm sure he can handle those insults himself, no need to be insulted on behalf of an imaginary being.

    I could say I'm killing God or a unicorn or a dragon... but how exactly do I do that? If I could, I'd have a lot to answer for. It's not rational to imbue superstitious thoughts with some sort of special right...

    Well Cheetah I'm so sorry I have a terrible memory these days. Probably because of the lack of sleep I'm suffering from for thinking about God and Religion all the time since I joined here.
    I don't mind when we criticize God for example in the thread "God's ultimate ambition" I think it was called. But I felt sorry when direct insults like #$% god he's such a @#$%headed whiner coz when I realized they hurt me a little bit (even profanity/insults directed towards other people hurt me) so I was wondering how much it would hurt theists!
    I know perhaps we shouldn't care how they feel due to the freedom of expression but we shouldn't abuse that to appear reasonably critical not downright and pointlessly outrageous. Perhaps if we manage to achieve that we'll see more members coming!

    Sometimes people need to say these things to work off frustrations built up by real life.  I find this is especially true for ex muslims during Ramadan, for example.  Given that the primary purpose of this forum is to support ex muslims, and that muslims have a plethora of forums to choose from, I don't agree with curtailing freedom of speech here to appease the sensibilities of muslims.

    Yep, why should we be made to be kept quiet if we actually believe parts of the religion are dangerous to humanity?

    As people have said above, respect is to be earned not given.

    I don't respect religious beliefs for the same reason I don't respect nonsensical, fatally flawed, illogical, irrational, moronic bullshit beliefs....its 2 of the same.

    If people don't want to be made fun of, they shouldn't have such ridiculous beliefs.

    I insulted god all the time when I was a Muslim. He was such a jerk. I expected better of him. But now that I'm an atheist; well, it'd be silly to get angry at a non-existent being, wouldn't it?
