    A recent stat in the UK showed the vast majority of 16-24 year olds consider religion more a force for evil. Also, let's have a look at the rise of non belief in US, UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, China, Japan, so yay it's coming from the east and the west. I have this image of it slowly creeping in from both sides until Saudi a cleric looks around and suddenly realises he's in a secular country.

    the problem is pretty much of those countries are secular, when i see some good solid numbers from muslim majority country like mine (Indonesia) and especially KSA, i'll feel better about the future

    I think just with how connected people are globally at this point, and how much it will rise in the future, Indonesia and other places may not become irreligious overnight, but communicating with people from other view points may at least show they're just human beings and not necessarily bad people. That will have an impact.

    Thats true but this has pretty much been the trend in Europe, East Asia and North America for the last few decades. Most young White Brits are non-religious, but at the same time the vast majority of young British Muslims are getting even more religious, or so thats what it seems like from experience. Growing up in East London, 99% of my friends were devout, or at least semi-religious muslims (and still are)...and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

    It's actually something that concerns me if I'm honest. Not the fact some people are devoted to their religion, but the racial divide in the country along these lines. Makes me wonder if there's a potential fallout if the new race stereotypes are white atheist brown incredibly religious.

    I think we won't know until another century. Figures are biased because one cannot properly account for apostates as most are in hiding ( In a poll I conducted recently at least half of you guys here are in the closet) and that's just those of you who have access to the internet and are able to express your views.  And even people who call themselves Muslims may not even be practicing but simply call themselves that because that's what their parents or grandparents practice. So that's just name-only Muslims that are quickly lumped in. There are a few sects in Islam but, not many and some are dismissed as not even being Muslim, like the Ahmedis, however Ahmedis are conveniently being counted as being Muslim when Islam needs numbers to be compared against Christianity.

    And as for Islamic sites, they count those who convert but not those who leave, and dismiss those who leave as never Muslim, to keep face.
    Religion worldwide has been on a down-fall and Islam is no exception.

    Also being Muslim in itself shouldn't been seen as a bad thing. If you love reading the Quran praying or whatever, that's your business. The thing we should be concerned about are Muslims trying to cite hate, inequality, and superstition from the Quran.

    Also the reason why non-religious is larger than expected is that people seem to conveniently forget China and Japan are atheist countries with a large populations. That combined with an increasing number from the UK and America, makes it a formidable ideology trailing right behind Islam in numbers. Muslims are now realizing it's creeping up behind them, as they are trying to catch up to Christianity.

    Well I didn't forget  Smiley Yes, a couple of years back the stats were 1: Christianity. 2: Islam. 3: non-religious/atheist. 4: Hinduism.

    I think atheism has even higher numbers than the statistics imply. Many countries do not have representation of atheists in the census. For example, if I recall correctly, the country of India does not count atheists in their census. Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, and Other are the possible classifications so there's no way of telling the population of Atheists in such countries.

    We will propagate the faiths we follow, theistic, deistic, agnostic, atheistic, etc. We can also teach them to follow a secular and liberal version of Islam as an alternative for those who won't budge.

    Then you will get two distinct sects of atheism. A minority will claim Dawkins as the rightful successor to Darwin as he was the most qualified and will beat up their chests every year to remind you. The other sect will be the orthodox Hitchenists.

    I don't personally think Dawkings has anything revelatory to say, i find him quite simple and dull lol, sometimes he whines about religion like a pmt woman and he also spreads alot of hatred.. Not sure how he could be compared to the greats or the likes of darwin..

    yep, just my personal view really..  he does a lot of public attacks on religion.. I don't think its very dignified for an influential public figure to sway peoples opinions.. Just my thoughts  : )

    I'm not sure how you define "attack" on religion. I've never heard him lash out against or say anything about the adherents of a specific religion, on the contrary, he has been very clear on the fact that he hasn't got anything against religious people. He does however criticize religion, but I don't see how that could be disrespectful.

    I don't see him spreading hatred in all honesty. I've yet to come across him discriminating on people solely for hat they believe, he criticises the beliefs themselves and states why he says is. I enjoy hearing these types of things and being able to access so many different points of view.

    Yeah. I'm not saying that Dawkins is some genius or that he has all the right answers, but I do enjoy listening to his debates and arguments in general because of the reasons you mentioned. He is very level-headed and fair-minded when he discusses religion.

    This is how society moves on. You could make the same argument that criticising racists, homophobes, slave owners and such was spreading hatred.

    I view spreading hatred as actively encouraging hate. Kill the religious, the religion are animals, religious people should have their children taken off them, etc. Actively encouraging hate and discrimination.

    Suki at first I found dawkins a bit on the arrogant side, but the more I watched of him and reading his books I realised that he is dealing with a very sensitive topic, he is confronted by highly emotional religious people from ALL faiths. The guy needs to be the way he is to get his point across, but notice how he is mostly level headed and witty while the religious get hot headed and emotional...
    trying to teach reason to emotional people is in fact a difficult task.

    I don't think what he has to say is irrelevant, he wants the next generation to grow up on reason ans logic not fiction and fantasy

    I dont know a lot about him really, he may be great, i just follow him on twitter and he tweets daily about how much he hates this and that about specific religions rather than teach alternative thinking, to me (on twitter) he has the qualities of a court jester as apposed to a prophet.  I much prefer David Attenborough and the likes of Brian Cox approach to alternative thinking, they teach their beliefs with subtlety and beauty, actually i think attenborough is agnostic, not athiest.. He is an example of a prophet lol or a god walking the earth lol
