Hamza Yusuf and Hakim Murad type of "intellectual" Islam

If all Muslims were like these gentlemen, I perhaps could respect Islam. But do they in anyway represent what Islam really is like as a religion? Or are they intelligent and good natured men who just happen to follow Islam as their religion as afew isolated individuals?

When I wanted to learn about Islam and shariah law I watched a video of hamza yusuf and was quite surprised. I think they represent the intellectual side of Islam even some 'islamists' I know who despise hamza yusuf's political views like supporting bush after 9/11 but respect him in terms of his works regarding explaining shariah law etc.

Both of them, particularly Timothy Winter, tend towards Sufism, so they can't be the most dry, dogmatic Islamist types. They represent an Islam that's merged with Western values, so I'd say that they both represent mainstream Islam, as well as Westernized Islam. But what do I know. I've heard some pretty crazy things from Hamza Yusuf that you could hear from any dim-wit Islamist.

All of this is, of course, vaguely ironic given the ideological imperialism that's so inextricable from Islam. Nevermind the fact that it also seeks to supplant all rival systems with theocratic totalitarianism. Hm, universal secularism or universal despotic theocracy, which would I choose?

I used to like Hamza Yusuf alot when i was a moderate muslim

he wasnt so extreme in his ways and i think thats wat appealed to me so much
