lol was it depressing? The best endings r the miserable ones and ununderstandable. They make u think  grin12 and of course weep alot  Cry  , which I adore both

wept from sheer frustration.  it was a cliff hanger but nothing to hang onto
even for your imagination to imagine.  It just ended midstream! I even looked
to see of the last page was torn out! LOL

I picked the second option but it's not really true for me. I am a rather slow reader because I can't manage to make time for the book I'm currently working on (usually read in the bus, and that's about 10 pages/day), so it can take me up to two months to finish a big book. But there's always a book in my handbag. Always.

You could try Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. It has been described as a series of atheist fantasy novels. I love them. And I love Harry Potter too.  Afro

I don't actually enjoy those much lol. I'm weird with the stuff I read, unless I can connect with the characters I tend not to enjoy it much. I might just go read a book on physics, I haven't read about that stuff in a while. I loved Hawking's book. Will look for others in a similar catagory.

    Peru,

If you would like some light entertainment, which is very charming, sometimes moving and often very funny you should read James Herriot´s books :

All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All. Be sure to read them in that order.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=james+herriot&x=15&y=16

    From reviews :

"The publishers call it a miracle, not too strong a word for a book that offers something for everyone - gusto, humor, pathos, information, romance, insight, style. It is vicarious living with one of the happiest and most admirable of people.....Many more famous authors could work for a lifetime and not achieve more flawless literary control than this unknown vet has in his first book....But if living well is even more difficult than writing well, his character and temperament are more miraculous than his style...The whole book in both its funniest and most tragic episodes, expresses a joyous and affectionate acceptance of life, animal and human!"
    Chicago Tribune Book World

"Warm, joyous, often hilarious...shines with love of life"
The New York Times Book Review

"Perhaps once in a decade a book like this comes along. It´s a simple tale, the memoir of a Scottish veterinarian who began his practice in the Yorkshire countryside in the thirties....told with such pathos, humor and warmth. It´s a beautiful book."
Georger Hecht, President Doubleday Book Shops

If you want something to tickle your funnybone, I would recommend P.G. Wodehouse´s books about Jeeves and Lord Emsworth, they have me in stitches.

Peruvianskies.  might i suggest a James Michener book
They are fiction, but based on some historical facts.
The characters are amazing, and you will easily find
yourself IN the book itself, swept away with the characters
and so engrossed at times you will have to literally rip the
    book away from your eyes.

Which one would you recommend as a starter for a Michener noob, J&T?

arX.  Chesapeake was mind blowing, Alaska, Poland, and Texas were
also amazing.  Mexico was more an anti climax in my opinion, compared
to the others.  Hawaii will blow you to the moon lol.  Some of them had
been made into movies, or TV series, but reading the books is so much richer!

    @arX

Centennial and Hawai would be good ones to start with.

    @J&T

I am a James Michener fan too and have been glued to, apart from the above, among others Carribean, Mexico, Texas, Alaska, Chesapeake. They are a good way to get a, albeit superficial,
knowledge of history. Although I must admit, that in the end they depressed me with their desrictions of Man´s inhumanity to Man. It seems that much of our time has been spent slaughtering one another down through the times. Sigh !

Paloma, that is so true.  But I revel in the way he portrays each character or
family, looking at it from their perspective.  Brilliant and genius are too tame
to describe his epic writing skills.

    arX  Start with Hawaii Smiley

    +1 !

Another VERY good book, lighthearted and very funny is, "Jeeves"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeeves

Its one of the rare books that I don't mind reading over and over, and
still laugh every time I read it.

And my vote goes to Mike Hancock (PBUH)

Mike Hancock and his wife Jacqueline. The couple married in 1967. She should be named as Sauda(ra) and Hancock should change his name to  simple "Cock"(PBUH)
