Zdzislaw Bekinski. Have no idea what the piece is called, but his stuff is very post-apocalyptic.
Bekinski never titled any of his paintings.
What an incredible painting.
Beksinski is fantastic and his death is such a massive loss to the art world. They should teach him in art history. Its criminal that they don’t, at least over here. I suppose he’ll be one of those artists that are more appreciated as time goes on. I hope so.
Such a tragic story too. He was photographing war as a kid. He was tortured about his art too, saying it was often misinterpreted. He burned loads of his work in his garden during the 70’s because they were too personal or not good enough. Later in life, his wife and son died a year apart of each other. His son committed suicide and it was Beksinski who discovered the body. That hit him hard. Then in 2005 he was murdered in his own home by some screwball who wanted a loan. What a fucking waste of a good soul just for money. Besides all that though, and you might not think so by seeing some of his work, he was an optimistic and funny guy.
His
official website seems to be broken at the moment (I can’t seem to access it, you might have more success with it) but there is a great collection of his work
HERE, you can even zoom in on the detail. If you’re interested in the bolder stuff, the more powerful and immediately striking nightmare/fantasy style like the one above, see his earlier-mid career paintings (the late 1960’s through to the 1980’s). His earlier work is more abstract and his later work is less bold, less striking - more ghostly, haunted and subtle - but no less amazing.
One of my faves:
