    @Alex

What's a guy like you doing reading that unmitigated bore Herodotus? What a quack! Many years ago running out of reading matter, I picked up the book, peeked between the covers and after five minutes put the Greek reverentially back on his shelf because I had developed a defect in my eye. I went to my doctor and he said flat prose gave one flat eyes. He prescribed a heavy dose of Gibbons.

Ah, Gillian Gibbons, a British woman arrested for naming a teddybear Muhammad in Sudan. I bet she has written a good novel.

On a less serious note: reading? Are you kidding me? All I know in this life is what I've read 10 years ago, before I got kicked out of university for spreading terrorist agenda and failing to explain the differences between Huntington and Herodotus. Since then I realized that my calling is drinking beer, not reading. Tragic.

No, I am saying that she should have been treated differently from anyone else guilty of such crime in Sudan, merely because she is British. Or white.

Your eulogizing of the country. You at least hail from there then.

Erdogan has been at the helm of the joint for the last eight years with no moves to shutter the hot gay bars in Istanbul and chase bikini clad women off the beaches. Perhaps he means to do that when's he out of power. Very clever.

Erdogan's overriding goal is to get Turkey into the EU so that an endless stream of Muslims from Turkey and elsewhere will be enabled to enter Europe unhindered. Do you think his chances of this would be increased or decreased by shutting gay bars? He's a stealth jihadist playing the long game.

Erdogan wants to colonise mainland Europe and close the brothels of Amsterdam before clearing things up in Turkey does he?

Naturally - although I don't think he's too fussy about the order. He's a devout Muslim who regards the Koran as the inerrant word of a creator deity called Allah. I'll believe otherwise when he renounces Islam. Having said that, the prospect of Erdogan closing Amsterdam's brothels is not the foremost of my concerns. In fact the Ottoman empire itself contained large numbers of brothels I believe.

Dude, it is in the interest of western countries to steer all countries' futures in western trajectory. What a week argument for a guy like you, MaB. I'm beginning to suspect that you do not meet weekly with a secret liaison from a Turkish embassy, who hands an envelope full of $100 bills. What about the free migration and economy? Shall EU create special discriminatory rules for the new member? I remember traveling through Turkey many years ago. Each city I reached had "nüfus" and funny numbers by a welcome sign. Maybe there was no welcome sign. I thought - how original to put altitude of each city as it's pride for everyone to see. Then numbers did not add up. I had to reach the only logical conclusion: it was population. What number would I get if I added up all of them? When it comes to politics, ideals do not trump economy and geography, mate. Wait, I don't know what I am talking about, there must be something funny in my Turkish tea. Is it a fifth bardak? Wow - blew my turban right off.

Turks vote for parties whose extremism consists of keeping the state out of women's wardrobes

They voted for a party which has eased the headscarf wearing restrictions and thereby deprived women who do not want to wear it from the small amount of protection the state afforded them from male relatives who would force them to do so.

    Including Mr Erdogan's daughter?:

Over the past fifteen or so years, there has been a marked increase in the number of women from Muslim families living Western societies, who have taken to wearing the hijab or headscarf. This trend, which I have previously observed when living in the UK, was very evident on the streets of Turkey during my recent visit. As I remarked at the end of my last post, this is a very obvious outward sign of the increasing Islamization of the supposedly secular state of Turkey.

    From your above linked article:

Istanbul is the 24-hour party capital of Europe — that's right, Europe. The city has just finished a stint as European Capital of Culture, an annual European Union-funded boondoggle that shines a light on the rich cultural and nightlife of Europe's regional cities.  Previous Capitals of Culture have included drinkers' paradises like Dublin, Glasgow and Liverpool.  In 2011 it is another place where fun begins with an open bottle,

So this "in-depth analysis" pretty much encapsulates your advocacy of Turkey's EU membership does it? Let Turkey in duuuude coz istanbul is the "partaay capital of Europe"? My name ain't Homer Simpson bud. I can't of course fault the statement that Constantinople is still on the European side of the Bosphorous where it was when the Ottoman armies crossed over from ASIA and conquered the place. That fact, however, does not make TURKEY part of Europe any more than Spain's control of Ceuta makes Spain part of AFRICA.

Erdogan's poem is no more theocratic than any comment by Bible thumping yokels like Sarah Palin.

Do you fancy her? To quote another member of this forum: "Tell me no lies."

"I find that any discussion regarding Sara Palin is always led astray by the fact that I want to put my dirty sex in her to an inordinate degree. It really is shocking. As a lifelong socialist, I'm disgusted with the number of times that retarded fascist has given me an erection.

I'd probably vote for her if I was American. It's tragic."
