    Lol,

I'm sure hitler did many good things in his life which are vastly overshadowed by warmongering and genocide. Which means he isn't totally bad.

1st: not cool to put Mother Theresa and Stalin in one category...
2nd: writer-engineer quote is neither good nor bad, it seems...
3rd: how do we belong to each other?

    1. Since the category is ‘Bad People’, they both fit neatly into it.

    2. I like it because there is an essential truth to it. The poet is a conductor in the grand symphony of life. We only have to look at holy scripture to see how potent the written word can be in shaping not only us as individuals, but entire nations and their histories. From newspapers to novels, from school books to fairytales, from appraisal to critique, the writer shapes who we are and makes us, us. They are the engineers of the soul.

    3. The things that divide us as people are petty and superfluous to the truth: that we are all essentially the same, we are all one, the same flash-in-the-pan ape species with the same humble origin and the same ultimate fate. Our skin colour may differ, but we are all red inside. See this great quote from a great man:

"We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity - in all this vastness - there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

~ Carl Sagan, A Pale Blue Dot

    1. How was MT a bad person? (If you don't want to answer how her evil is comparable to that of Hitler's)?

    2. I thought topic was "good quotes" not "true quotes".

    3. We are insignificant in the universe, we are the same... I follow, I follow, wait, why do we BELONG to each other? How do you belong to me?

    1. Here's a post I made earlier

    Quote

That bitch was ruthless. The real Mother Teresa was nothing like the public image. She was the head of a death cult. She surrounded herself with death and suffering. She actually promoted poverty and suffering rather than trying to ease it in any way.

She was up to all kinds of heinous shit, denying children antibiotics, letting patients suffer so she could play the part of the saviour and say some prayers at the last moment. She'd convert people as they were dying. She’d refuse medicine with the excuse that they would be going to meet God soon anyway, and suffering like Christ suffered is the highest virtue and measure of commitment. When she got sick herself, where did she go? To the best American doctors she could get.

She had a slave empire for all intents and purposes - women forced into convents against their own will, which she treated like shit. She was an old school Bible purist and had repulsive ideas about womens rights centred around submission, chastity and abuse.

The biggest mystery of her life is where the fuck all the money went because she didn’t spend it all on hospitals or charity. Her idea of a hospital was a cold iron bed and no pain killers, filthy and forgotten about. People have come forward describing her hospitals as resembling concentration camps. People afriad to come forward, should I say. Who would dare criticise a saint?

Mother Teresa - one of the most overrated people in history. The more I learn about her the more I wonder what the fuck all the fuss was about and the more I wanna throw up. Is that haggard, evil whore really your role model?

    2. The OP asked: "Can you think of any more good quotes which were said by bad people?" I posted two quotes I considered good from people who I consider bad.

No so much a quote, but rather a writing, which I think is really rather beautiful, especially considering the mind that produced it:

When your mother has grown older,

    When her dear, faithful eyes

No longer see life as they once did,

    When her feet, grown tired,
No longer want to carry her as she walks,

Then lend her your arm in support, escort her with happy pleasure—

the hour will come when, weeping, you must accompany her on her final walk.

And if she asks you something, then give her an answer.

And if she asks again, then speak!

And if she asks yet again, respond to her, not impatiently, but with gentle calm.

And if she cannot understand you properly, explain all to her happily.

The hour will come, the bitter hour, when her mouth asks for nothing more.

    Hitler:
"We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions."

"The conception of the new Movement, whose fundamentals can be expressed in a single sentence: "The Lord helps those who help themselves," opposed this. That is not only a very pious phrase, but a very just one. For one cannot assume that God exists to help people who are too cowardly and too lazy to help themselves and think that God exists only to make up for the weakness of mankind. He does not exist for that purpose. He has always, at all times, blessed only those who were prepared to fight their own battles... "

"In vowing ourselves to one another, we are entitled to stand before the Almighty and ask Him for His grace and His blessing. No people can do more than that everybody who can fight, fights, and that everybody who can work, works, and that they all sacrifice in common, filled with but one thought: to safeguard freedom and national honor and thus the future of life."

"National socialism is the determination to create a new man. There will no longer exist any individual arbitrary will, nor realms in which the individual belongs to himself. The time of happiness as a private matter is over. "

"The peoples of Islam will always be closer to us than, for example, France."

"It is thus necessary that the individual should finally come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence of the nation, that the position of the individual is conditioned solely by the interests of the nation as a whole."

"The most important thing about marriage is that the man must not let the woman feel downtrodden simply because she is a woman and he is a man. "

    Mao:
"Enable every woman who can work to take her place on the labour front, under the principle of equal pay for equal work."

I did say "almost" and ok maybe not the "The people of Islam will always be closer to us than for example France".
I suppose I'm imaging a person holding serious issues with the Capitalist system(ironically the younger me never did).
Or it might have resonated with an idealistic/naive younger me looking to be part of something bigger than myself. A sense of belonging, being part of a collective, all working toward a greater "goal". Perhaps not that dissimilar to some of the reasons people convert to Islam.
Needless to say, I do know better and I don't see it necessary to spell out the negative realities of these collective mindsets/ideologies.

The idea of grading the value of human life according to ability and performance, the idea that everyone must fend for themselves, the idea that those who need help but don't seek help are cowardly and lazy and weaker humans, the idea that the nation must be loved above all else. No individuality, no personal happiness or privacy, just fanatical patriotism, chauvinism, supremacy in unison. Those ideas are the breeding ground of nationalist automatons. I find them obscene. Anathema to me.

Quite right, I'd  be lying if I said I couldn't see major faults in this quote(no plans to become a Hitler apologist just yet). Sadly all to often people attach themselves to an ideology they feel gives them a sense of purpose and/or belonging but can't/refuse to see the underling inhumanity of the ideology.

"Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions."
    Karl Marx,

I think this is a good quote,

but I'd be interested to hear people's views on Marx, surely he couldn't be classified as a bad guy, could he? After all as far as I'm aware he never carried out atrocities on his fellow human being.
Some may argue that his very philosophies indirectly resulted in influencing bad people to carry out great acts of violence against any who opposed this adopted ideology.
On the contrary it could be argued that bad people simply hijacked a philosophy of good social intention and used it as a guise to seek unquestionable power.
In all due respect to Marx he probably deserves at least one thread to himself and how about poor Engels he never seems to get a look in.

'Christianity was created by some decadent and degenerated Romans as a tool of oppression, in the late Roman era, and it should be treated accordingly. It is like "handcuff's" to the mind and spirit and is nothing but destructive to mankind. In fact I don't really see Christianity as a religion. It is more like a spiritual plague, a mass psychosis, and it should first and foremost be treated as a problem to be solved by the medical science. Christianity is a diagnosis. It's like Islam and the other Asian "religions" a HIV/AIDS of the spirit and mind.'
