    Yes people have long been angry and fed up with the govt and the corruption and the brutal suppression of freedom etc... but what's changed is a new internet generation able to speak freely and exchange ideas and organise as never before and they want to have that freedom.

    The situation was just waiting for a spark to set it off - that spark was that poor young graduate who couldn't find any work other than selling vegetables from a cart - and then having that taken away, humiliated and slapped - and dousing himself in petrol. When he lit that match - he set the Arab world alight.

    Moreover people in responsible position can not just say "Mubarak you are dictator and you are criminal"  they have to use appropriate language ..



    They cant because they support him and all other illegitimate rulers in the Muslim world.

    This is good because now maybe Americans will understand that anger at americans in the Muslim world may not just be the Koran or this or that hadith but...wait for it....US support for dictators.

    Just read on here (link below) that the army and police have clashed (unconfirmed report though) The military holds the key like the pak military they are very powerful and will have the last word...........

    Israeli Knesset member expresses support for Mubarak

    Israeli parliamentarian Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, a member of Israel’s Knesset, expressed support on Wednesday for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, according to Israel's daily The Jerusalem Post.

    "I don't think it is possible [for there to be a revolution in Egypt]," Ben-Eliezer was reported as telling Army Radio. "I see things calming down soon. Israel cannot do anything about what is happening there. All we can do is express our support for Mubarak and hope the riots pass quietly."

    The paper also reported that Ben-Eliezer, a member of Israel’s Labor party, met  with senior Egyptian officials on Tuesday.

    No this is not some protest led by a conspiratorial agenda at the hands of some insidious group. This is a grass roots movement designed to address the concerns of the Egyptian people. I just hope the Muslim brotherhood don't come with a medieval agenda... because there asses will be next.

    Just got back from holiday there yesterday, no trouble whatsoever in Sharm el Sheikh, nobody talking about any trouble anywhere and nothing being shown on any tv channels about it.   Life continues as normal.  wacko

    The fate of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, his entire state apparatus, and that of the popular uprising confronting them now depends largely on the actions of his army and security forces.

    The two are not the same.

    Broadly speaking, Egyptians respect their army, which is still seen as a patriotic bulwark against their neighbour Israel, with whom they went to war in 1967 and 1973.

    But the black-clad riot police, the Central Security Force (Amn al-Markazi), belongs to the interior ministry, and has been in the forefront of much of the violent confrontations with protesters.

    Poorly paid and mostly illiterate, they number around 330,000 when combined with the Border Force. They themselves rioted over low pay in the early years of President Mubarak's rule and had to be brought under control by the army.

    The army has a similar strength - around 340,000 - and is under the command of Gen Mohammad Tantawi, who has close ties with the US (he has just been visiting the Pentagon).

    When Mr Mubarak ordered the army onto the streets of Cairo and other cities late on Friday, his aim was to back up the riot police who have been heavily outnumbered by the protesters.

    But many of them are hoping the army will take their side or, at the very least, act as a restraining force on the police who have been acting with excessive brutality throughout this protest.

    Hence the cheers that greeted the columns of army vehicles as they drove through Cairo on Friday night.

    Up until now, President Mubarak has enjoyed the support of the armed forces.

    He was, after all, a career air force officer suddenly catapulted to the presidency when Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981.

    But if these protests continue and intensify there are bound to be senior voices within the military tempted to urge him to stand down.

    This is the most serious popular challenge to his 30-year rule that anyone can remember.

    I hope to god that Hizb Al Tahrir or any other Islamist group does not take over Egypt. If that happens, Egypt will spiral downwards. I hope Egypt adopts a secular democratic system.
