    My brother was round today and we both said the same thing - this is the first time in my life I can truly say I am proud of my Egyptian heritage and I am so proud of the Egyptian people.

    On the news they were saying that the secret police and other security elements (controlled by the interior ministry) were behind the looting and stuff to cause mayhem kinda like it was in Tunisia (there they tried to take the army on) in the article below I read that ex-cops that are addicts are the thugs behind the looting, anyone know about this?

    These messages weren't coming from mobile phones or computers, but from an amateur radio sending out Morse Code somewhere amidst the chaos in Egypt.

    The Egyptian government's efforts to limit communications within the country has triggered a wave of activism from an international group of free speech activists on the Internet called Telecomix.

    Organizing using chat rooms, wikis, and collaborative writing tools, this largely anonymous group has worked to inform Egyptians about their communications options while receiving incoming messages from them. Telecomix has previously worked on free speech efforts in Tunisia, Iran, China and other countries who have tried to censor or block parts of the Internet.

    Egypt has been identified as a "top priority" for Telecomix on one of its network sites, We Re-Build. It has a wiki set up as a one-stop shop with the latest chat rooms and resources for the ongoing efforts.

    There are roughly 20 extremely active members, 50 active and some 300 total including lurkers, according to chat administrator Christopher Kullenberg from Gothenburg, Sweden.

    "Think of Telecomix as an ever growing bunch of friends that do things together," Kullenberg says

    For the majority of users, anonymity is stressed and real identities are rendered obsolete.

    Said one chat user, in awe from Australia: "I'm new here, just trying to help."

    Here's a timeline of recent events for the group:

    When Internet and mobile services were cut off in Egypt on Thursday night, though landlines were operational, members immediately got to work to send information to Egyptian fax numbers. Searching for a common string of characters found in Egyptian fax machines numbers on Google, they discovered a large amount of numbers.

    At first, they sent out Wikileaks cables to these numbers, but then they determined the Egyptians didn't need additional motivation. Instead, they were interested in information on how to communicate with each other and the outside world. The activists thus began providing instructions for using dial-up modems and amateur radios, known as Ham radios, which the Egyptian people could use to communicate.

    The group says it's also worked on receiving and decoding amateur radio messages, sent on frequencies recommended by the group of activists. While these groups have only been able to receive a small amount of messages of a short length with an unknown source, the Egyptian people's use of amateur radio to transmit messages represents an interesting utilization of old-fashioned technology to circumvent government restrictions.

    Is there such a thing as an Islamic democracy? Seems that tribal rule is the norm,with brutal dictator families running the show and the filth of the bogus 'faith' being rammed down the throats of the oppressed. Islam works well as it is based on terror-frightening children from day one. Freedom and Islam cannot co-exist. A slave mentality prohibits freedom of thought and proper education.

    In theory, it supposedly is something akin to a democracy when the caliphis chosen, but only Muslims can vote in it, and only a Muslim male can be it and after a a lot of prescreening by scholars.  Shariah law as it is practically and applied isn't anything like what we would consider a modern democracy though.  Perhaps an islamized democracy can exist, but not an Islamic democracy.  Islam almost always denigrates into authoritarianism

    I doubt many really think that the events in Egypt will overnight transform Egypt into a true Democracy - but it's a step in the right direction. There are many Egyptian Muslims who are also secularists - not to mention the Christians and not an insignificant amount of "non-religious" (Ladeeneyoon/Agnostic/Atheists etc...) Egyptians. There are also many liberal/modernist and Sufi Muslims who do not follow literalist interpretations of Islam. Regardless of past experiences with Democracy in the Islamic world - I hope that Egypt can set the example for the future and create - at the very least - a big step towards that ideal.

    The only alternative is continuing the brutal and oppressive rule of dictators (who show a benign face to the West) - and that is unacceptable to the Egyptian people - regardless of how preferable it might be to the West.

Saudi Arabia, he added, “stands with all its means with the government and people of Egypt.” SPA reported Mubarak had responded by assuring the King that “the situation is stable (in Egypt) ... and what the world has seen is nothing more than an attempt driven by the suspicious and strange agenda of some groups which do not want stability and security for Egyptians.”
