Now the point is that Egyptians seem to be able to mix being religious and a pretty liberal lifestyle - and believe me there are many, many Egyptians who have this sort of odd sort of religiosity but DO NOT want the Muslim Brother hood.

I am not sure if you misunderstood me or not? I am not questioning that at all. Ultimately it is for Egyptians to make this choice and decide how they want to live. If Muslim Brotherhood is a danger it is a danger first and foremost to Egyptians.

What puzzles me though is that it seems that there used to be a genuine secular potential in 'Muslim' world some thirty or so years ago. What happened to it? For example I saw photos of an Afghanistani family from the '70 and had I not known that its depicting an Afghanistani family I could have placed them anywhere in the 'Western' world.

The problem with what you guys are saying is you are just assuming based on no experience with Egyptians
For IA people whom live in poverty areas are usually the most people to get drunk and stoned and to just give you an example look at the movies.
For RAM , people in Egypt or a lot of the people in Egypt at least 60% don't trust Muslim brother hood and the rest a lot of them like their motivation but wouldn't trust them with office.
Egypt is probably one of the secularist middle east countries, come on if it was like what you guys are saying , there wouldn't be night clubs and beer brewed in Egypt and other kind of Wine.

1- I lived in Egypt for more than a year and studied at a private medical school. Made a lot of friends from the middle and upper classes. Visited lots of public hospitals and interacted with poor people. Visited Alexandria, Assyut, Suez, Port Said, Marina as well as living in Cairo for the whole time. And from my experiences the average Egyptian is more religious than the average Iraqi.
2-Iraq also had government beer and alcohol factories. We also had many night clubs and always had a big music industry.

The only thing that I agree with you on is that people don't trust the brotherhood, that is true. But still people in Egypt think religiosity is a measure of honesty and integrity.

These poor women have to be allowed to breathe properly, whereas those women[ Huh?] have to be made to STFU to block the nonsense that comes out of their mouths.

I understood your question - just kinda went on a bit of a waffle  grin12

I think is a massive question and I can only relate what I have myself observed. I think IA makes some good points.

My fathers generation in Egypt (the time of the King) were very Westernised and gave only the lightest nod to Islam. He and his generation (from the educated Egyptian classes) looked to modernity as the answer to their problems. They wanted to imitate the west, and studied western philosophers and scientists. That class from the 20s/30s/40s looked down on what they regarded as the backward/ignorant religiosity of the Fellaheen (Peasants/farmers) and Islam was nothing more than a quaint set of rituals one paid lip-service to. Even after Nasser that was still the attitude amongst many Egyptians in the 50s and 60s and there was the huge rise in Arab Socialism.

But then what changed all this was the rise of the Jihadists/fundamentalists or whatever you want to call them. The reasons for this are many I think - Saudi money spreading Whaabi/Salafi doctrine - before that Hassan el-Banna and then sayyid Qutb and the rise of the MB - and just a new generation of more educated masses who wanted to take a look at the Qur'an themselves and the rise of literalism and that anyone can say what Islam says. (before the ignorant masses relied on the traditional sheikhs.)

Just watching the live pictures from Tahrir square and there are young men and women holding hands and kissing, others drinking beer and men with big beards and women in niqabs all mixing - there really seems to be a spirit of togetherness that is extraordinary - there really does seem to be a sense that they just want to be free to be who they are - they want a freer society.

On Monday, the Egyptian army said it respected the "legitimate rights of the people".

In its statement, carried on Egyptian media, the military said: "To the great people of Egypt, your armed forces, acknowledging the legitimate rights of the people... have not and will not use force against the Egyptian people."

Protesters flood Egypt streets Up to two million gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square as massive protests against President Mubarak are held across cities.   says news

    http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/02/20112113115442982.html

    Quote
Up to two million protesters have flooded into central Cairo, turning Tahrir Square in the Egyptian capital, into a sea of humanity in a massive show of protest against Hosni Mubarak, the country's president for three decades.

Packed shoulder to shoulder in and around the famed Tahrir Square, the mass of people on Tuesday held aloft posters denouncing the president, and chanted slogans "Go Mubarak Go" and "Leave! Leave! Leave!"  Similar massive demonstrations calling on Mubarak to step down are also being witnessed across other cities, including Sinai, Alexandria, Suez, Mansoura, Damnhour, Arish, Tanta, el-Mahalla and el-Kubra.

Tens of thousands were reportedly marching in Alexandria while the number of those protesting in Sinai was estimated to be around 250,000.

Tuesday's protests were by far the biggest since street demonstrations broke out against Mubarak's rule last week. "The crowd is very diverse - young, old, religious, men, women - and growing by the minute," Al Jazeera's online producer said from Tahrir Square. "They're chanting the same slogans they've been chanting all week. Someone actually hung an effigy of Mubarak from a streetlight."...

well that is good ..all peaceful protest.

    Have you read the comments?

The Demo from 0:30 onwards is different from the Hizb ut-Tahrir demo. I want to make it clear that the demo directly opposite the Egyptian Embassy was in no way linked to HT. They had asked to join us, and everyone booed them and refused. This was a totally, non-partisan demonstration, planned to express the need for regime change and solidarity with the people of Egypt. No political affiliations were expressed in this demonstration.

Please make this clear in your report.

    or

Guys, please 'flag' this video as 'spam' --> 'misleading text'. The first 30 seconds of this video are from a Hizb-ut-Tahrir demo that is NO way, shape or form related to the Egyptian Embassy protest against the Mubarak regime. PLEASE do this - it is absolutely critical when much misinformation is flying around (CNN, FOX, Sky News for example) claiming that the protests in Egypt are somehow influence by 'radical Islamists' or, not even kidding you, 'Alqaeda'. Please flag & dislike!

    or

As an Egyptian I would like to clarify that our protests are completely secular, organized by the Egyptian people. We do not differentiate between Muslims and Christians in our protests which have absolutely nothing to do with Hizb-ut-Tahrir. What we want is a democratic, free and "SECULAR" country

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/31/google-speak-to-tweet_n_816657.html

    Quote
Google has devised an easy way to get tweets out of Egypt, even when the Internet's down.

Monday afternoon the Internet giant introduced a speak-to-tweet service that allows callers to tweet by calling one of three numbers and leaving a voicemail. The project is a collaboration between Google, Twitter and SayNow, which Google acquired just last week, according to the Google blog.

The three numbers to call are +16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855.

The service instantly tweets what's said in the voicemail, and adds the hashtag #egypt. There's no internet connection necessary, and people can listen to the messages by dialing the same numbers or visiting twitter.com/speak2tweet.

While the service was put in place in order to help Egyptians trying to tweet amidst the protests, it's unclear if this service will remain in place in the future.

    From the Google blog:

We hope that this will go some way to helping people in Egypt stay connected at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with everyone there.
