    Protest dying out?

    Nope.

Today in Tahrir is the largest gathering of protesters so far!

The army gave up checking them and just waved them in. Side streets packed with lines of people.

They're not going until Mubarak goes. His dirty tricks have fooled no-one - and only strengthened their resolve.

Wael Ghonim has been released and re-joined the protesters. He gave an interview last night seen by Egyptians and choked-up with emotion.

I'm glad the protest today was so lively.
A million apologies for doing this but I'm gonna tell you about Romania, because something like that did happen here.

So after more that a thousand people died the dictator and his wife are executed on Christmas 1989.

1990 late January Coal miners are brought in the capital to beat up the members of the historic parties which had been resurrected. State TV interviews miners who say they found guns and drugs at the parties headquarters.
Also they are condemned as fascists and so on.

February the 18th Anticommunists stage a march, occupy the building housing the government; same miners return. Some people are arrested: students, journalists the usual suspects...
The protesters are condemned as hooligans and thugs(Golani).

April 22nd A  square, named Universităţii becomes the center of peaceful protest.
A massive show of support from the people, attention of international media and so on preclude repression for a while.
A nice song from that time "better a thug than an activist better homeless then traitor better dead than communist..."
    Notice the name tags.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmCR2REua8g
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eiQ4sLsC00
Students and others set up tents in the square.
On  the 20th of May Iliescu, estranged friend of the former dictator is elected president with 90% of the vote for two years.

    June 13th

The miners took their time this time. They roamed the streets beating up anybody looking intellectual.
Death to intellectuals and We work we don't think become popular slogans.
    They left three days later.

I've been watching the developments in Egypt on al-jazeera...closely.
It's like they give dictators a handbook. Same behavior, better coverage.
I do hope they don't manage to beat back the people. By the looks of things they did that in Tunisia.
One shred of legitimacy and they will repress the revolution. I do hope the people win. But i kind of doubt it. It's like watching a remake of the same film.
Since I can't pray for the protesters I don't know what to to but to keep watching tv while at home.
    God speed...

There was absolutely no need for the sad music in the last part where Wael breaks down crying - but that's Egyptians (and Arabs) for you - they have to be so melodramatic - nevertheless great interview - and one that has had deep resonance with the Egyptian people:

if you guys know anything to help me out with this.. would be appreciated..

the americans are telling him he can stay till september, so he's just going to sit tight and wait untill the protesters run out of steam.

That will  be the plan.  The protests need to enter the second phase which will require different tactics and a different strategy by the protesters and pro democracy advocates.  Just protesting in the square every day isn't going to cut it.  They are going to have to diversify.

"Anyone with good intentions is the traitor because being evil is the norm," he told a TV channel.
"If I was a traitor, I would have stayed in my villa in the Emirates and made good money and said, like others, 'Let this country go to hell'. But we are not traitors."

This speaks to the human spirit of equality of justice.  I watched the interview and I think every human being irregardless of culture can understand the desire to be free.  Wael's reaction to the protestors that died imposed against Mubarak's lack of even mentioning them speaks to reality of those who want freedom and those who are in power.  Fuck the Egyptian establishment and that "council of the wise".  They can fuck off and let the real people take charge of Egypt.

According to this report from "Reporters without Borders" they were arrested on Sunday (6th of Feb) by the military police as they were returning from the demonstrations. RwB fear the authorities will use this as an excuse to imprison him indefinitely and have called for his immediate release.

They say there is a concerted campaign by the authorities to arrest and silence reporters trying to cover events - and in particular the local Egyptian reporters and bloggers. The blogger Asma Mahfouz says she and her family have received a number of death threats from Mubarak supporters.

When did the US infer anything about intervening after September?  I really cant see them getting involved in this mess, given the lessons they learned in Iraq & Afghanistan.  And if they do, they will be expected to police the next Arab state that  runs into problems.

They aren't intervening militarily, but giving implicate support to the idea that Mubarak stay until September and there be a "transitional government" which probably will simply hand off power to a Mubarak clone while the state apparatus has a chance to rebuild their internal security to harass and quell dissidents

i fear that too - so why do you think the US is giving implicit support to a september handover date? do you think they are hoping to buy some time to influence a non-islamist/pro-israeli handover and control the process a little more?

Yes they are. They want the revolution to halt and have the current Vice President take over. He's staunchly secular but also happens to be a thug known for torturing Islamists.
