  • A really stupid question about phones
     OP - February 06, 2011, 04:17 AM

This July I am going on exchange from Australia to Sweden, and I really wanted to buy an iPhone like right now. The thing is, I can't go on a plan now and then go overseas for a year... so I am thinking of buying the phone outright and just getting a new Swedish SIM card when I get to Sweden.

Will this work? If I buy my iPhone here and then get a Swedish SIM card? The phone is like 800 dollars outright, so if I can't use it in Sweden I'd sort of be really cut that I'd then need to buy a cheap phone in Sweden. :S Also, things like 3G, would that work in Sweden too?

I am ridiculously dumb with phones and laptops and stuff like that, I was going to ask the phone guys when I buy it but I can't help but think they're not going to give a damn if I can use my phone or not in Sweden, they just want my money in their pocket.

Oh yeah, for those who have iPhones, is it worth the money? I need to buy an iPod touch, and I will need to buy a new phone in Sweden anyway if I don't get an iPhone... so I thought if I get one I could kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

    Thanks!

not sure. look for a world phone. from my knowledge iphones are not world phones. i know there are a few blackberries designed to work globally.

Yes it will work - as long as you buy an unlocked iPhone 3GS/iPhone4. Unlocked means a phone that is not locked to a particular provider like Vodafone or 3. You can easily test that Down Under by inserting SIMs from different providers in the same phone. If both work they the phone will work with any SIM. Or simply ask if phone is locked or not.

No. The most over-hyped product ever. Well, apart from iPad. A perfect example of a 'post-ideological' ideology.

    I'll notify RSPCA.

    That's what I have ^_^

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

iPhone's are an over-hyped + over-priced piece of crap.  I prefer Androids, they aren't locked down like iPhones and aren't as stupidly expensive. They don't have as much internal memory however, but I brought a 16gb card for mine which has kept me going quite happily.

It depends what you want from a phone really. Both have their pros and cons.
