    I know that (-shit)0.5 would be an imaginary number, if shit were a number. However, -shit would not be, therefore shit gets real at  ((-shit)0.5)2. The parts after that are superfluous.

    Yes, I do realise this. You're missing the point. The way the joke was presented shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what "real number" means in mathematical terms. There are two sets of parentheses. I agree the inner set is required. However, the outer set is not, nor is the minus sign directly inside them. Shit gets real before they come into play.

    The minus sign changes the imaginary number, which has then been squared back to -shit, to shit. Redundant to make it real, but it's now real and positive.
