Britain played a major role in providing the platform for Wahabism to flourish as it opposed Ottomon Sufism.

Will we see Iran sending troops to defend the Shiates? I hope a Show down does occur. I think its time for Saudis to taste abit of a whooping. They enjoy brainwashing others to do while they live in Luxury over someone elses blood.

Just heard the news that 6 Pakistanis have been beheaded in Bahrain along with cutting of hands of others. These Pakistanis were killed apparently by protesters as Pakistanis are assumed to be Sunni.  I fear this will ignite Shia-Sunni sectarian violence now

That is horrible news.,  it is going bad to worse., Indeed it will ignite Shia-Sunni sectarian violence ., That is bigger  and worst  bomb  against innocent  Muslims (not against to Islam) than atheist, humanists questioning Islam.

Analysis: Tiny Bahrain could provoke regional conflict

    Quote
Reuters) - When Saudi Arabian troops rolled into Bahrain to help quell Shi'ite Muslim protests, the world's top oil-exporting region inched closer to a sectarian stand-off that could involve non-Arab Shi'ite power Iran.

Gripped by its worst unrest since the 1990s after protesters took to the streets last month, Bahrain said on Monday it had asked the Gulf Cooperation Council, a six-member Gulf Arab bloc, for support in line with a regional defense pact.

The intervention of Gulf Arab troops in Bahrain is highly sensitive on the island, where the Shi'ite majority complains of discrimination by the royal al-Khalifa family, who are Sunnis.

    Quote
    LISTENING TO THE SAUDIS

Analysts saw the troop movement as a mark of concern in Saudi Arabia that concessions by Bahrain's monarchy could inspire the conservative Sunni kingdom's own Shi'ite minority.

Shi'ites make up about 15 percent of the population in Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally and the world's top exporter of oil.

Ironically the US is telling the Saudis and the Bahrainians to institute "democratic" reforms but the Saudis won't hear of it and the US can't risk alienating a regional ally.

    4 Pakistanis killed in clashes

LAHORE – Four Pakistanis were murdered while more than 250 had been injured while thousands others are trapped in Manama, the Capital of Bahrain, during violent anti-govt clashes in the small Kingdom, forcing the authorities to call in troops from the neighbouring States to maintain peace. Some Pakistani nationals who are among those trapped in the anti-government uprising contacted The Nation on Monday by phone and told the horrific tales, happening across the Gulf state.

It was worth mentioning here that between 50,000 to 60,000 Pakistanis are working in various cities and towns of the small Gulf Kingdom.

    Quote
Pakistanis are killed and beaten….the protesters are thirsty for Pakistani’s blood….you can’t imagine…if they succeeded (God may never let it do…aameen), they will not let a single Pakistani alive out of bahrain, but they will kill all and will buried all in one grave…for God’s sake….help us…more Pakistanis are dead and injured already. writes Muhammad from Bahrain

Saudi Deployment in Bahrain Risks Creating Sectarian Conflict

    Quote
Saudi Arabia’s decision to deploy security forces in embattled Bahrain threatens to escalate a domestic political dispute in the island state into a sectarian confrontation with Iran, whose reverberations may be felt as far afield as Iraq and Lebanon, analysts said.

Saudi Arabia, together with security personnel from the United Arab Emirates operating under a mandate from the Gulf Cooperation Council, has placed 2,000 soldiers and police in Bahrain. At cost of four lives, scores of injured and the imposition of martial law, calm has been restored. A week after the March 14 deployment, businesses, the stock market and schools were re-opening.

But analysts said the Saudi move – the first ever by one Arab state intervening militarily in another since the onset of the so-called Jasmine Revolution three months ago – has crossed a red line for Iran and may prompt it to intervene as a counterweight.
    .
A tiny country with no oil of its own, Bahrain nevertheless holds a strategic place in the Gulf. It is home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet and is adjacent to Saudi Arabia’s biggest oil fields. Its Sunni Islamic monarchy is close to the Saudi ruling house as well as the U.S., but some 70% of its population shares the Shiite faith of Iran, Riyadh’s rival for regional supremacy.

“Iran sees it as an attack on the international Shiite community,” Theodore Karasik, director for research and development at the Dubai-based Institute for near east and Gulf Military Analysis. “Also, they have claimed Bahrain in the past, as a historical claim, is Iran’s 14th province. That kind of rhetoric is a portent for the future.”......

To be honest, I don't get why Bahrainis would want to revolt. Their country is already one of the best out there.. I could see why Libya, Egypt, Yemen, etc would revolt, but Bahrain seems to be very prosperous as it is.

Ever without knowing the specifics I will say Sunni king + large shiite population = prosperous for a few, poverty for the rest

1,000 Pakistanis recruited for Bahrain forces

    Quote
ISLAMABAD, March 20: More than 1,000 Pakistanis have been recruited to serve in the Bahrain National Guards, learnt on Sunday.

The recruitment has been made through the military-run Bahria Foundation and Fauji Foundation, which train the selected personnel before sending them to Bahrain.

Sources said that although the recruitment process had started much before the eruption of the current unrest in Bahrain, authorities have been continuing the process. The two organisations have been asked to complete the training process as early as possible.

They said that interviews and tests of thousands of candidates had been conducted by a team comprising Bahraini officials and an American instructor and the recruits are likely to leave the country in a month or so.

I've been keeping an eye on events there. I find it hard to understand how the authorities can do such things to their own people. I'm so glad I never grew up in the Middle East. Sadly many grow up ingrained with the idea that human life is very cheap and have a lack of empathy and humanity.

The environment is very sectarian in the Gulf, especially among Sunnis. I grew up in a Sunni family and have experienced a lot of underlying hatred and wariness toward Shiites, even among average folk. That, coupled with government deception, have led most people in Gulf countries to support the crackdown on the protestors.

At least 10,000 people joined a funeral march earlier on Friday for slain 16-year-old Ahmed Jaber al-Qattan, who was killed by a bird shot blast during a demonstration on Thursday night.

The funeral ended in clashes along the main east-west Boudaia Highway, where police reportedly used tear gas, sound grenades and rubber bullets.
