They're not doing it for the right reasons, are they?

There's something I should point out regarding this. You seem to think the reasons for action are important. I don't.

Frankly, I don't give a rat's arse what the private reasoning of the UN delegates was when they were deciding how to vote on intervention. If they were all thinking intervention would give them greater access to oodles of goat pr0n and that this was really cool, I don't care. All I care about is the result.

If this change of government ends up being good for the Libyan people, I will consider that satisfactory regardless of what the initial reasons for intervening were.

If Gaddafi had been able to use his air force and armoured divisions with impunity during that period, I think it is fair to say that the revolutionary forces would have been in extremely deep shit.

    Agreed.

I realise you love taking any and every excuse to rant against NATO, but it does make sense to take account of the realities on the ground in Libya.

Ummm no. If that was the case I'd be making a thread every time some villager was killed by NATO forces in Afghanistan or a drone strike next door. In case you hadn't noticed I do criticise others too. Seeing as NATO is the biggest military imperialist power (for now) naturally they would receive more stick from me  Tongue

I don't think those are the only priorities, but I do think they were significant factors.

I think the ICC should sentence him to life imprisonment for appalling taste.

     Cheesy

I think he should be tried in Libya instead of the ICC.

Looks like he will be, if he is captured alive. Earlier the NTC was talking about shipping him and his sons off to the ICC, but today they seem to favour trial in Libya.

How long before the NTC are called traitors, munafiqs, apostates etc. by Islamists and clerics?  whistling2  Gaddafi is using this, he's released an audio tape telling Libyans to fight the "rats, crusaders and unbelievers"

@Aphrodite: I was curious about DU and started a thread here: DU rounds and residue effects

TalkRats is loaded with professional scientists, so is a handy place to discuss such things.

I've read the PDF that Mike linked to, and there weren't any particularly abnormal effects noted in that study.

Then he didn't have any credibility in what he was saying coz he was chums with some of those very "crusaders" he talks about a few months earlier. If these reports of troops being on the ground are true he has some credibility in his claims from an Islamic POV.

Well I still think he would have very limited credibility for the moment, but I agree that the longer any foreign troops stay in Libya the dodgier things are likely to get.

There have been special forces in Libya from various countries training the rebels for some time.  That is how they pushed to Tripoli, how they got camo, and how they learned with way was up with a rocket launcher.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

That doesn't mean they should stay there though.  Several neo cons have already called for a "stabilizing force" to be deployed.  Yea let's send a 19 year old Alabama kid to North Africa when the only time he has heard the word tribe was in American history books about Native Americans to "stabilize" a place most soldiers couldn't point to on a map  whistling2

Oh lol, I wouldn't say he "fled" that would imply he left combat (something which in his own words was prohibited by Muhammed) He just evaded capture by fighting and moved onto a safer location. In the book I'm currently tora bora is described as a victory for Al-Qaeda......and had he been killed he'd be regarded as a martyr as he is now, Saddam on the other hand was captured, humiliated and killed by the Americans and shias  Cheesy
