  • The Big Questions - Sunday 27th
     OP - February 24, 2011, 11:08 AM

I've got a spot in the audience for this Sunday.  Hopefully I'll get to speak, and hopefully what I saw will be worth hearing.  The subjects are

1: Should we (UK) be ashamed of our arms trade?
2: Should people be able to adopt babies of different ethnic origins?
3: Have we been here before? (Reincarnation.)

I know what I am going to say on 2 and 3, I don't really know anything about 1 though.

So keep an eye out for a fat bald bloke with a twatty moustache Smiley

Is it going to be like last time when you had your hand up the whole time and didn't get a word in edgeways?

    Just kidding, good luck.

Unless US start getting ashamed of its arm trade, UK being ashamed of it means nothing at international level, and will become weak point for terrorist activities.

People need to put their points accross succinctly on this programme and stop speaking over each other, then we might get a chance to hear what TheRationalizer has to say!

What were you going to say anyway?

Well, it seems that just like the last time I was in the audience it was a complete waste of my time.

When interviewed on the phone for my first appearance I was asked for my opinions on the topics, on the top "Does Islam need better PR?" the researcher said I had an excellent point and would flag me up as someone to allow to make a point. On this episode the researcher on the phone told me the same thing for two of the subjects I gave an opinion on.

It seems that this is just one of those things that they tell you on the phone to encourage you to come along. It was very clear I had a point to make on the two latter issues and yet again was ignored. At one point Nick (the presenter) was looking me straight in the eyes, shook his head to indicate "No" and wagged his finger side to side at me. I felt a disproportionate amount of time was spent on guest speakers' points, but most annoyingly I think Nick spent too much time talking himself. There were probably about 3 or 4 points Nick made which I myself intended to make, and the sceptic lady guest speaker at one point was asked for an opinion to which she replied that Nick had just said what she intended to say.

Ultimately my realisation is that the audience from the 2nd row back are simply there to make up numbers, clap on cue, and to provide a contribution just in case the conversation runs desperately dry.

I certainly won't be going a 3rd time, it was a complete was of 4 hours of my life.

Waste of my time too - i watched the whole thing to hear you say something, only to hear them over-focus on the front row & speakers.

I agree, but dont think they wait until they are desperately dry as most of the time they do reach out.  Think youve just been desperately unlucky as the main speakers managed to hold the entire shows when youve been there.

There was too much waffling, especially from the Christians who were telling us what they believe about life/afterlife.  We know what Christians believe!

And in the adoption discussion the guy in the front row talking about giving children a 'holistic' upbringing was given too much time to speak.

The woman who opened was just there to promote her book "Precious" - I've seen her elsewhere doing the same.  Her argument is essentially that although her white parents loved her, taught her that skin colour is unimportant, and didn't discriminate against her she *felt* that black people were inferior.  Because of her negative experience this means that black children should not be brought up by white people.

Of course this logic works brilliantly, which is why after a black woman was convicted of abusing her children we extrapolated this single experience and made it illegal for black people to have children.

All makes perfect sense when you don't think about it.

BTW: My wife said you did get to hear me laugh very loudly when that woman said that Quantum Physics proves reincarnation Smiley

I wonder do they just pass the most intelligent points they hear on the phone to Nick so he can make himself sound knowledgeable.

When the Sikh said that we reincarnate across species and sometimes have memories I was going to ask...

If cross species reincarnation with memory is a fact why is it that nobody has ever been reincarnated from an alien of a technologically advanced species, disclosed advanced information which has furthered mankind's knowledge, and consequently won a Nobel prize?

You can't prove it never happened, so therefore reincarnation must be true.   parrot

Reincarnation is just the Indian religions response to the unimaginable finality of death. They created a theory that the soul perpetuates when the body dies, but its just a comfort blanket in the same way that the supposed existence of Heaven (and the sadism of hell as a threat for disobedience) is the comfort blanket of the abrahamic religions.

In fairness, reincarnation is nicer though, even though its laughable.  With reincarnation, what's the worst that can happen?  You get reincarnated as a toilet brush or something.  Still better than eternal torture in a fiery hell.

Except that Hinduism says you get reincarnated into a lower species if you perform bad deeds in your human life, and the cycle of re-birth starts again.

And I think that certain Indian religions believe that the ultimate aim is to break the cycle of birth and re-birth until eventually becoming part of a wider universal consciousness or God.

Yeah, but I think the real-world effects have the potential to be worse-- e.g. the caste system, attributing people's economic and social status not to the economic and social justice afforded to people under the system they live within, but rather they did something bad in a past life.

    fuck you
