Yeah, there's a difference between having evidence that the Earth is a spheroid and proving it beyond doubt

This man is a buffoon. He is a nincompoop. He is a clown. He is a jackass. He is a moron. He is a craven bullshitter.

He also sits on a media empire that has a global reach, and is reified by millions of Muslims around the world, including many in the UK.

What does that say:

(a) About the minds of those Muslims he impresses, including Muslims who live in a secular, pluralist society like the UK?

(b) About non Muslims who might feel inhibited from ridiculing his nonsense for fear of upsetting the feelings of a large constituency of Muslims by doing so?

Nothwithstanding his being barred from preaching in Britain for his bigoted comments, his rhetoric about Bin Laden and terrorists and so on.

If a Christian preacher from the idiotic bible belt of America came out with this shite he would be ridiculed into obliteration, especially if he had a TV satellite channel that was beaming this garbage and nonsense into British homes. Yet there are Muslims that lap his buffoonery up that are British.

How the hell can Muslims integrate if Zakir Naik with his idiocies, his bigotry, his nonsense, is a template for their worldview, if they feel no discordancy between that morons preaching and the society they live in, which believes in equality, egalitarianism, freedom of conscience, that has respect for science and rationalism and secularism?

Zakir Naik is easy to laugh at and simple to debunk, but for me his popularity raises some distrubing, awkward questions.

I was disappointed that he was barred from the UK. I wanted to be in the audience. Having seen his talk I would have LOVED to have been there

If even the most popular Christian preacher from the US came to Britain, would he be able to gather enough followers to fill out Wembley, Sheffield and Birmingham arena? I doubt it. Yet this is precisely what Zakir Naik hoped to do.

Also consider that the Christian preacher has a pool of 40 million UK Christians, compared to only 3 million Muslims for Zakir Naik.

Very worrying indeed.

Just wondering, does anyone know of any evidence that the early Muslims or pre-Islamic Arabs knew that the earth was spherical before they started learned of the greek and indian astronomical knowledge in the mid 8th century? There's quite a few hadith and some pre islamic poetry that imply a flat earth e.g.

sun has setting and rising places
sun rises between horns of satan
sun rises and sets between horns of satan
Allah showed Muhammad ends of earth
sun commanded to stop moving

Imru' l-Qays (sun has rising place)

Hāssan b. Thābit (sun has setting place)

Also Christian scholars in Syria at that time believed the earth was flat in rivalry to the Alexandrians who followed Ptolemy (ref and more evidence in section 1.5 & 3.5 in the main article on my website - see my sig.)

I've not seen any early stuff that indicates any of them knew or believed in a spherical earth though. They seem to have learned that from Ptolemy and co.
