     OP - March 09, 2011, 05:06 AM

Hi all, I'm a 23 year old from Australia and am glad to have joined CEMB! This site was referred to me by a fellow atheist whom I met on Youtube during a religious debate

It's a vicious cycle to break out of a belief, as many of you may already know, but I am proud to call myself an ex-muslim.
    .
Since grade 3 I have been learning about religions. I've found that I actually enjoy studying religions. By my early teens I realised religions were man-made. But unfortunately having facts laid out in front of you isn't always enough when you were brought up to believe in something so strongly and fear some deity to the point where you would deny anything which disproved it.

I remember sitting in my Uni tutorial over 2 yrs ago learning about mythology. My tutor literally changed my life. All he did was draw a simple diagram on the board showing how the world once was enchanted, and is now not. Obviously this was something I was already aware of, but his little diagram made me walk out of that class and declare myself an atheist. Guess you can say I had an "epiphany"  grin12

Some would think, being in Australia, "deconverting" from Islam might not have much impact, but unfortunately I grew up in a community where the number of ethnic muslims are UNBELIEVABLY high So even though my family aren't strict muslims, I felt the pressure to be a muslim from everyone else around me. Over the years,  I've lost "friends", lost the respect of a lot of people, been accused of being an enemy of Islam - questioned about WHY I want to destroy such a "peaceful and beautiful religion" *gag* - and have been called the devil's spawn. Lol.

I could laugh it off though, because nothing compares to the pain and hurt that comes from trying to break free of the chains of religions. It's psychologically and emotionally exhausting, and I felt like I could finally BREATHE when I had the courage to declare myself an atheist.

Anyway I think that's enough essay writing, I'm just glad to have been introduced to such an awesome website and wish I knew more like-minded people who live where I do. :(

Thank you for your time Smiley

Welcome. Australia rocks  grin12. Can i ask what your family's background is? They sound Pakistani, but then it could be that all muslim parents/communities respond in the same way to a child's apostasy..

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Smiley

My background is actually Turkish but the community I grew up in has a LOT of turkish, lebanese, afghan, iraqi, saudi, pakistani people in it. Hence the reason why it was so difficult growing up amongst them!

What's worse now is the lebanese-influence on the young turkish people in this community - they are attending "discussion nights" which are led by extremists who literally brainwash them.

As for Islam's views on apostasy, I think it is one of the most arrogant and intolerant religions that exist, towards anyone who is not like them. I guess having a god who tells you you are the chosen one is enough excuse for a person to develop a superiority complex.

Yeah australia is a pretty good place. I don't know about the education system I'm not entirely happy with it lol but I have not studied any where else so I couldn't say if it is better or worse.

I have noticed though the Pakistani Muslims here are almost as radical as the Arab ones.

One night I was out clubbing with my friends, we get into the taxi, I sat in the front seat. Clearly we were all intoxicated. And the Pakistani driver looks at me and says "so are you muslim" because he heard one of my friends say "wallah" mid-sentence. So I said No I am Atheist. And I honestly thought the guy was going to have a heart attack at the wheel.

The ride home was more than half an hour, and the entire duration he and I were arguing. He was like "there are three things you should NEVER do, you should never be an unbeliever, never eat pork, and never drink". So I responded with "I don't believe in god, I am drunk at the moment, and I love bacon". He was pretty pissed off. Lol.

How do you find it to be in Pakistan?

Haha! MPA is fine by me.

Oh don't worry I have been reading through some posts and surprisingly the debates don't get AS heavy as I would have imagined. Especially in comparison to the arguments I have had in the past in which they've almost turned physical on their end! Lol!

Actually the debates don't get so heavy because the Muslims make a point of steering clear away from us coz they always end up losing. The more serious debates however took part, at least in my experience, in the Arabic section where "Electronic Mujahedeen" ALSO end up humiliated.

    Lol, cool story.

Its pretty bad here if you are vocal, but if you keep your thoughts to yourself and pretend to go with the crowd, and keep a low profile, you don't have any problems other than the internal issues that come from leading a double life.

Its also kinda funny at times when you see people being paranoid, thinking that things like earthquakes and lightning will go away by reading the quran, etc. When I moved from Australia to back here it felt a bit like going back in times a few centuries Tongue.

Have you heard of Cenk Ughur from the young turks? Look him up on youtube.. he's also an ex muslim, and he'll probably make you proud of being turkish Tongue.

Like I said it was very simple. He had a diagram showing how the world went from being enchanted to scientific .
In between he had certain myths or "miracles"  as the subheadings and branching out he listed all the more likely explanations behind them (eg: Jesus walking on water, immaculate conception, etc).

He also showed the circular arguments that kept people believing in magic. ie: "There's no real explanation ---> therefore it must be magic." Not to mention illusionists and magicians who fooled the towns people, and once again the logic was : "theres no explanation, therefore... magic" and so on...

Even though it is somewhat "common" to know that lack of understanding led to certain things being labelled as miracles etc in the past, I still somehow found a way to convince myself that maybe these "miracles" did really occur because of my desperate need to believe in a god watching over me keeping me and my family safe.

Like I said, these were things that most people are already aware of, but having them written on the board, staring at me forced me to just accept the more logical explanations over the faith-based ones. I just remember walking out of that class, walking upto my partner and telling him that I just could not believe in any of it any more no matter how much I forced myself.

LOL i can imagine. the best are those who respond with "I'm not going to bother arguing with you because you just don't want to believe it and nothing I can say will change your mind". Apparently deep down people like us believe in hell, yet somehow we are stupid enough to CHOOSE to go there just because we are stubborn. Right. I can definitely see the logic behind that.  Roll Eyes
