  • Prayed Friday Today
     OP - March 11, 2011, 07:18 PM

I prayed Al-Jum'a today and it filled me with a sense of inner calm and well being.
So although I have my doubts about Islam, I still ENJOY prayers.
Any psychological analysis would be welcome. whistling2

P.S. The amount of non veiled cute girls walking out of the mosque was massive (we parked in front of the women's section of the mosque)

I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...

Did you feel the same peace while praying as a Muslim?

You can even feel inner peace when you are at home. We can discuss the science behind it. Nobody is going to kill you if you are at someone else's home. You won't feel inner peace.
The only reason you are feeling peace now, is you were doing certain thing you were doing a good portion of your life.

They didn't have smelly feet at all they smelled quite good in fact (I go to a mosque where mosly upper class people go)
And I delayed my Bowing and Prostration and watched amazed by the beauty of being part of this.

Sometimes but not this much. Maybe praying as a deist/semi-quranic muslim is different?

Ive never found inner-peace at prayers.obviously there is a sense of socialising and a feeling of being with others makes you feel good.

The sound water and lots of mountains makes me feel good.I feel a sense of peace.

Yes the prostration is almost identical to Hatha Yoga's Child Pose!

Its the sense of community and brotherhood. Why do cult members feel inner peace? Because they are part of a bunch of people who all feel the same thing.
Go to a catholic church during mass. You'll feel the same thing. Especially if you know and do the motions.

I wish parents everywhere could remove their veil of religion and see their kids for whom they actually are.

Well there's also this sense of safety like "If God was there, he would have appreciated I have done this in His name, and he will lighten my way till the next Friday"

Yeah I've always wondered why. Speaking of girls near al kaaba: I was once doing omrah and people nearly raped a girl that was trying to reach the black stone I was like to hell with the stone and kept pushing people away from the poor girl

Ah, it's been a long time since I've been to a Jumaah prayer. About 3 years I think but I was in a Muslim country at the time. I never enjoyed the Khutbah though. I always felt like sleeping during most of them. People forget about them afterwards anyway.

For me, I actually enjoyed praying. It wasn't just the social aspect of it since I enjoyed doing it at home as well. I know I was deluded back then, but I felt one-ness with God when praying. It was satisfying at the time.

    Good thread, luftazure. Afro
It reminds me of the Quran As Porn thread.

You've got good points from most of the posts already.  Points about:
    • Sense of belonging/brotherhood/love  like there is in every cult.  (norabora's point paraphrased)
    • Taking time out to go and worship/thank/praise/please  your creator and sustainer who will reward you for it.  (your point paraphrased)
    • Silence in the mosque and everyone quietly performing their prayers etc.  This relaxes the mind.  I find sitting by the river alone on a nice Summer's day relaxing too.

I read an article in NewScientist last week about how this kind of thing makes one feel at peace.  When we make decisions it introduces an element of stress because we have to think about whether or not we are making the right decision. When we do anything which makes us stand out from the crowd we risk being noticed, analysed, and judged, which also causes stress.

It seems that this is relaxing in part because knowing exactly what is required of you relieves stress, knowing that you fit in without having to think about it relieves stress, feeling you are a single part of a larger whole makes you feel accepted.

Apart from all that, closing your eyes alters your brain patterns and makes you feel chilled out.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.
