     OP - March 24, 2011, 06:46 PM

This email was forwarded to me - I won't comment, as it would be superfluous:

    Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmathullah.
    A Beautiful story about QURAN.

Why do we read Quran, even if we can't understand a single Arabic word?Huh?
    This is a beautiful story.
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>لماذا نقرأ القران, حتى لو لم نكن نفهم مفرداته العربية جيدا
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with
    >>>>>>>>his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early  sitting at the kitchen
    >>>>>>>>table  reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to
    >>>>>>>>imitate him in every way he could.
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>عجوز امركي مسلم يعيش في مزرعة في جبال شرق كنتاكي مع حفيده الصغير

    >>>>>>>>في كل صباح الجد يستيقظ باكرا ويجلس على طاولة المطبخ ويقرأ القران.
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>حفيده الصغير كان يريد ان يصبح مثل جده لهذا كان يحاول تقليدة بكل طريقة
    >>ممكنة
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but
    >>>>>>>>I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the
    >>>>>>>>book. What good does reading the Qur'an do?"
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>في أحد الايام سأل الحفيد جده  قائلا (جدي!  انا احاول ان اقرأ القران مثلك لكنني
    >>>>>>>>لم افهم كلماته,والذي افهمه انساه وسرعان ما اغلق الكتاب.ما هي الفائده المرجاة من

    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to
    >>>>>>>>the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little
    >>>>>>>>faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again.
    >>>>>>>>This time the boy ran faster, but  again the  basket was empty before he
    >>>>>>>>returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to
    >>>>>>>>carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.
    >>>>>>>>
    >>>>>>>>قام الولد بعمل ما طلبه منه جده,لكن كل الماء تسرب من السلة قبل ان يصل عائدا الى

    >>>>>>>>النهر مع السلة ليحاول مرة اخرى.في هذه المرة ركض الولد بشكل اسرع,ولكن مرة اخرى
    >>>>>>>>السلة فرغت قبل وصوله المنزل.كان يتنفس لاهثا.واخبر جده انه من المستحيل ان احمل

Oh, I actually groaned when I reached the last paragraph. Actually celebrating not understanding, blindly reciting without thinking, all so you can be 'purified' by that brainless, comprehension-less repetition and a celebration of dunce-hood. And I can just see all those heads nodding at the 'beauty' of it all, mashallah, what a story.

(why's it set in Kentucky though  Huh?)

the weird thing about this email is its very unconventional approach to Isalmic evangelism... appealing to mysticism...

I think we can claer up any confustion with regards to the provenance of this email if we replace the words "Allah" with "Jesus" and "Quran" with "Bible".

Brainwashing, basket washing, there seems to be a nice irony to the story.  Cheesy

Interesting article about the supposed health benefits of reciting the Qur'an, though the author just references himself!

Circular reasoning and now circular referencing...

Quran is the word of Allah, His Attribute, how is it possible that those words alone donnot have any effect. There were so many non-muslims(non-arab) who accepted Islam just by listening to the Holy Quran although they didnot know Arabic.

It is reported that when MAulana Ata Ullah Shah Bukhari used to recite Holy Quran the hindus used to cry. It is the Ijaaz of the words of Allah that it pulls people towards itself. even the kuffar of Macca knew its effect and tried their best to stop people from listening to its recitation.

Although we all know that knowing its meaning is Noorun Ala Noor. i mean to carry out the commands of Allah one must know what He demands from us. The impotance of knowing the meaning of Quran cannot be ruled out but the 10 Ajar on each letter of Quran are on the arabic text of Quran. Gaining Ilm of Ahkaam and knowing the meaning has its own Ajar and benefits but reading Quran(without knowing the meaning) has its own benefits and Anwaar. Wassalaam"

I'm not sure about that, tbh.  Now that the Salafis have spread their literalist Islam all over the world (even influencing deobandism etc), I think rationalism is worth trying.  It might have greater success.  I think the Salafis follow their religion (despite many hardships) because they are sure that it is The True Religion.  Hence if you can only convince them that it isn't they will readily leave, like I did.  The problem is they are often so dogmatically committed to their religion that they will not consider alternative viewpoints.

I think you misunderstood my point, teapot, sorry. I think the salafis are the muslim rationalists because they fundamentally try to understand everything through only one system of logic. They are just the other side of the coin to new atheists.

+1 I think with each Islamic sect, there are a different set of effective strategies.  The other problem with the wahhabis is that they need something tangible, along with a no nonsense set of rules to cling onto.

I was told a similar story by a martial arts instructor once. If I remember correctly, it involved an eager student who went to a kung fu monastery to study the ancient art with the greats. His first day there, his sensei gave him a bucket and told him to walk down to the river, fill it up, and bring it back to the monastery. When he got back, his sensei told him to smack all of the water out of the bucket using only his open hands. Once the bucket was empty, the student, eager to learn, asked the sensei what next. The sensei gave him the exact same instructions.

And so it continued day after day until an entire year had past. After the year was up, the frustrated student left the monastery disappointed and headed back home. Back in his town, around supper, his friends and family asked him to show them all the cool kung fu stuff he had learned in the past year. At first, he refused and tried to change the subject, but his friends and family persisted. Finally, he stood up and exclaimed, "It was a huge waste of time! I didn't learn anything!" And he smacked the table with his open palm and broke it in two. Everyone clapped in amazement. Masha Allah Tabarak Allah.
