  • Hello from Belgium !
     OP - April 19, 2011, 08:42 AM

    Hello everyone,

I've been lurking here for a few months already so I thought it fitting I'd introduce myself.

Unfortunately I can't make my messages too long at the moment, since I am struggling with a very bad case of RSI in both arms and one wrist , so I will post my complete story later on.

    For short :
I live in Belgium, 39 years old, you probably guessed already that I love cats (have 4 of them), used to work as assistant in a law practise.
I was originally an atheist, but met my Moroccan husband when I was 18 and married him only 8 months later (!) and became muslima.  The marriage was, to put it mildly, a catastrophy so I divorced nearly 3 years later.  So at 22 I was a divorced muslimah  Roll Eyes I held on to the faith for a couple of years, but especially after the events of 9-11 I couldn't continue to kid myself : this was not a peaceful religion !  Especially when I read the comments on the islamic forums at that time, that "just wasn't me".

So I stopped being a muslimah and never gave it another thought, until now - I see many problems arising with muslims and their conflicts towards us Belgians and our values, and so I decided to try and put my 2 cts in the debate.  At the moment I'm in the research-stage but the plan is to contact local politicians through "open letters".  No need to contact the national government as we don't have one here in Belgium  lol  grin12.

Well that's about the main headlines, sorry to be so short for now.

    Cheers,
    Catlady

What exactly are you currently researching in Islam and what is your general knowledge about Quran/Hadith/Muhammad himself?
You should check out IsLame's document (see his signature).

    Enjoy your stay!

My general knowledge of islam is pretty extensive, I even passed an exam to be an islam teacher a hell of a lot years ago  Roll Eyes But my knowledge is a bit rusty so don't ask me to quote verses  wacko Hadith however, don't know much about them (I guess I always found them silly, even when I was a muslimah).   but still have my books here for referencing lol.
I did read IsLame's document and found it extremely interesting and useful - thanks IsLame  Smiley

9/11 was a turning point for you to leave Islam? What about the continous bombings/overthrowing of Muslim countries by America? is that not the turning point for Peaceful Muslims to convert to become Islamists?

I think 9/11 is not a justified reason to leave Islam unless your one of those trolls posing with a false ID and false story.

Most of us here have left Islam for real reasons not because some mad men from Saudi decided to fly a plane into a tower.

Plus Catlady, how can you expect Muslims or Islam to be used peacefully when America and Nato invaded Iraq and found no Nuclear bombs, when America and your Western allies supported bin laden in Afghanistan, or when your America and Western allies started arming and training the future Alqaeda and Taliban?

    Makes-sense now?

    Anyway Welcome.

    Thanks guys Smiley

Yeez has asked a perfectly sound and logical question, so I will reply to him first.  No my parents were not religious.  They came from catholic backgrounds but lived in large cities where religion wasn't much of an issue - even in the fifties lol.  They came to live in the small village I was born in, where most people were catholics.  But I just went to catholic school because it was the best option, at home we never even talked about it.
As for my ex, when we met he was 23 and I was 18.

Pashtun, regardless of the fact that you are having a bad day or not, your comment is completely unjustified.  Like I said, I have a long personal story to write which is now impossible due to Repetitive Strain Injury.  After I post my complete story you can judge about 'real' reasons.

Pashtun, your unhealthy obsession with America, and your desire to bring it into every single topic, even an introductory topic of a Belgian lady is somewhat puzzling and stupid.

She did not once say she justified the US governments activities, and you can't draw that conclusion from one woman who decides to leave Islam because she can't relate to its idea of "human rights".

You have this extremely simplistic way of thinking, you're either a Muslim or you're an American-government-loving evil imperialist. It's more complex than that, her distaste for Islam no doubt came from her own personal experiences, and may have been highlighted from 911.

Leaving Islam doesn't mean she subscribed to the other extreme, it means she left one of those two extremes. Now, drop your judgments.

Thanks for the parrots Smiley  Hope my cats don't get them  Cheesy

I may have been too vague in my first post : the reason I left Islam is of course not the single event of 911.  That event only made me realize that a whole lot of so-called "moderate" muslims were not so moderate at all, because on many (really many) forums a lot of them were cheering because of the deaths of all these people.  That's when I realised that I really didn't have anything in common with those people and left all the forums.

But before that event, of course there were other reasons why I left :
    - I didn't believe the Qur'an was the unaltered word of God,
    - I didn't believe its "science" - I'm an evolutionist,
    - I didn't agree with the fact that religion could not evolve - and I didn't want to stay stuck in the 7th Century
and I also didn't agree with the fact that islam is an ideology in which division of "church and state" is impossible.

So you basically you grew up with FULL FREEDOM with no restrictions and quite adventurous.,   would that be the reason to fall for a guy far away from your background or did that guy persisted to make you a Moroccan  Queen??  That was a quick marriage., Was he very religious??  did you meet his parents and other folks from his side??  Clearly he is a looser.. Does he still contact you. After all he was also an young guy..

CatY these are just fun questions., if you don't like to answer PLEASE DON'T.. and don't worry abut that guy Pashtun.. he is just Grumpy.. grungy  and tries rundown everything from US of A.. I too hate those US of A guys .. they canceled my visa 5 times..  rascals

Hehe - no problem with the questions so far !  Yes I grew up in religious freedom, however my parents still were "morally conservative" (does that make sense ?) and I didn't know much about real life when I met my husband.  He wasn't very religious but he couldn't hide the fact that he was a "cultural muslim" - his opinions on women were, well, backwards lol.  I met his family here in Belgium, actually I got along quite well with them.  Only the women were very religious there - seems that is also something familiar around here.
My ex doesn't contact me no - he's dead  grin12 And no I didn't kill him, he died from some agressive cancer a few years after our divorce, which was in fact quite sad because he remarried and had a little baby.

I am an atheist again indeed - I just can't bring myself to actually believe wholeheartedly that something such as God exists.

And yes, I live in Vlaanderen, but I am both French and Dutch-speaking hehe (helps tremendously when you're looking for a job).  My mother is from the French-speaking part of the country.

I've often heard the complaint about people of moroccan/african descent not being able to find a place to live.  This is a ridiculous kind of discrimination - strangely it is often the Turkish home-owners who deny access to the Moroccans !  They don't even get along amongst themselves  Roll Eyes  wacko

As for the catlady, I guess I'll have to sharpen my claws Smiley  But there can never be too many cats  Afro

I would also say that they could get along since they are all muslims, and since the goal of islam is to re-establish the one united Califate, but apparently they don't think the same way Smiley
