Is anyone else watching it today?  Smiley

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

At the same time that the government is cutting billions from unnecessary extravagances such as hospitals, schools, teachers, nurses, the old and the sick, the unemployed and single parents the people of Britain will be invited to participate in the joyful celebration of the marriage of Mr. William Windsor and Ms. Katherine Middleton. The ruling Coalition has had the good sense to spend a lot of money on something as essential to the Public Good as the nuptials of Willy and Kate.

    Wonderful!

At the same time that the government is cutting billions from unnecessary extravagances such as... etc

    Have a heart, Kenan.

The wedding cost £10 million. The royal family drag in £500 million a year from overseas tourism alone. Some conservative estimates say the wedding will bring in up to a £1 billion in extra revenue.

Meanwhile, in the middle of the miserable quagmire of doom and gloom you described, billions of people all around the world are tuned into a celebration of love for one day - Prince William, one of the good guys, getting married to his pretty girlfriend. It can only be a good thing. Hearts, flowers, and magic good news stuff.

    I'm off down the pub.

I'm not a patriot and I'd abolish the monarchy first chance I get. But like Ishina said, it's a feel-good celebration. (Not that I'm gonna watch it.)

I went to work to avoid it, then in the bus on the way home realised what a Scrooge I was being.

I had a lovely talk about it with the lady next to me.  People who'd been to watch got onto the bus with Will'n'Kate flags and scarves. There was bunting and balloons on the pubs...

And suddenly I felt a beer coming on.

If value of royal family lies in their ability to sell related merchandise, why don't we make Mr. Bean our king?
I am sure he will be able sell more merchandise and movie tickets than the queen. He could also stand outside of buckingham palace juggling for the toursists all day.

+ 1, which justifies this wedding imo if those numbers are correct

Great Britain PLC, we can show the world we can celebrate, and let's face it, people like celebrations, good culture, history and heritage. The Royals today are nothing more than just for show, but it is a good show.  Afro
