  • Who do you look up to?
     OP - June 12, 2011, 10:55 PM

I'm not talking about parents or family, because obviously that is something that many people will say.

Instead, theology / politics / spirituality, who do you look up to as a rolemodel or perhaps your favourite quotable person.

Maybe it is Mahatma Ghandi, or maybe it's Malcolm X, or the Pope or Margaret Thatcher. Smiley

For me, Richard Dawkins. Perhaps it is cliche and predictable, but it was this man that lead me to be more "proud" (not sure if that is the right word to use) about my atheism, or at least confident in my lack of religious beliefs. Smiley I would say Christopher Hitchens is another figure who lately I'm really enjoying learning and listening to.

    Interested to see the responces...

Ben Goldacre who taught me how to think logically and rationally, therefore ultimately aided me in apostatisizing.

Stephen Hawkings with all the wonderful and intricate discussions and debates and theories about religion and evolution.

Richard Dawkins for quite predictable reasons yes with all the diverse, thoughtful, logical and rational debates regarding religion versus evolution.

But with all seriousness, is it odd to not look up to anyone?
Like Wen people ask me "who do u look up to?" I dont usually say anyone.
Idk why ii dont look up to people.

I guess if u ask who has inspired me, would that be the same thing?

If so, I would say my senior year AP English teacher.
He was the first open athiest I've met.
He was also teaching at a 98% arab school.
I would say he is the one that gave me the courage to do everything ii have done.

If to look up to somebody is to want to learn something from them, then everyone.

I was so gonna do the people who are taller than me joke, but I would one up it.

Only for as long as it takes for me to knock them over.

Genuinely, I have found that it is pointless to look up to anyone, since everyone has their flaws, no one is perfect enough to be my hero anymore.  Even Clark Kent has his flaws, and he is close to perfection as is.

No, I may admire traits in a person, but the whole package floating hero?  no one anymore.

If one is continually shown the follies of their idols, can one ever idolise again?

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Whether consciously or subconsciously, you probably do look up to people or have a fondness for certain people. The views you have formed have no doubt been formed through learning from others, and there is no shame in admitting that you have learned from those that inspire you. It is great that you want to work towards being someone that others look up to, but most influential people have their own rolemodels and inspirations, from Prime Ministers to celebrities.

+1! I don't look up to anybody, because then i would have the right to look down on other people. As people we are equal I think, the only way to prevent quarrels and wars.

Uhm no, you can choose to look up to someone that inspires you, but that does not mean you are required to look down on somebody else. That's silly. I believe all human beings are equal, but we are judged by our values and ideas, and our own thoughts. Thoughts are open to scrutiny, and there is nothing wrong with being inspired by those who have values / beliefs / thoughts that either encourage you to learn or look at life more openly.

I think having a rolemodel or someone to look up to is the highest indication that you're willing to learn. I look up to people here, and have learned a great deal from people here. That doesn't mean I'm not equal or that I look down on other people, it means that I acknowledge the importance of learning from other people, and I would never only look to myself to learn more, because I would learn very little then. Everything I understand about life came from someone else who may have been inspired by someone else. It's quite restrictive to look to yourself and only yourself.
