Great series. Watched all the episodes and I've read all the books.
Some spoiler free news about season 3 and the remaining books
Season 3 will only cover just half of the 3rd book. This is a good thing because the third book is by far the most dense as far as huge things happening. There are at least 3 moments in the third book that are very worthy of being season finale scenes, and in my opinion it is the best book out of the five. It will also give Martin an extra year to try to finish the last two books before the TV series catches up with him.
It is very unlikely Martin will finish in time for this. The most favorable estimates put him at 3 years for completing the first of the final two books, and he hasn't ruled out splitting them into additional books if necessary. So far he is confirmed of writing around 10 chapters of the 6th book, around 400 pages, although only 200 are considered polished to the point in which he considers them done. He estimates 1500 pages each for the last two books, so this puts him at about 20%-25% complete in a year and a half's time. At these speeds were looking at 4-7 years a book. His age could likely get in the way of finishing the book, as he will be between 72 and 78 when finished. He's said that if he dies before he's done, it's over. He won't reveal the ending or story outlines. The good news is is that he's written over 3 times the amount in 2012 on this book as he had in 2011 so these estimates could be drastically reduced if he sticks at it, and he thinks he'll finish it much faster than the 5th book.
Also if anyone hasn't read the tales of dunk and egg, they are fantastic short(er) stories that if HBO was smart would look to making into movies. He's released 3 of these, and has written another that will be released in the future. Four two hour movies is nearly another season worth of material, so maybe it can be used to fill the time between the 6th and the 7th books, or perhaps they'll split books 4 and 5 into multiple seasons as well, although much less happen in those books despite their growing size...
